A December 2006 trip
to St. John by PlumChum9
Quote: This one day excursion gave us the flavor of the unique island of St. John.
While staying in St. Thomas, we did a one day excursion to St. John, via the Red Hook Ferry. It was a short 25 minute ride across the bay to St. John. I believe the price was $8, one way. As we were waiting to meet our 'tour guide' we walked around downtown. We were surprised how small downtown was but found ourselves in an impromptu festival. There were wonderful little stores around corners and upstairs to buildings. We found the people friendly and helpful with directions. Our New England neighbor and friend gave us a contact of an island couple they were well acquainted with. So we had a local of St. John give us the island tour out as far as we could get before dinner. Our tour guide was Karin W. Schlesinger, author of "Desiring Paradise", which is her and her husband's story of how they went from raking leaves during a New England autumn, to making the leap to move to St. John. Needless to say, we got a lot of the local stories of the people, street lite, fork in the road, cows, and so many more island highlights.
Our only regret was that we didn't plan on being by so many beaches and were only prepared for the car tour. Even though the driving was on the left side of the road, cars were set up with the steering wheel just like home, on the left side. It made it easy to adapt quickly. Left shoulder to left curb. The other nice thing nice about St. John is the view of the British Virgin Islands. You didn't get that feeling of vast emptiness a single island, such as Bermuda may give you. Even though it's a good size island, there is a small community feel due to the small permanent population.
What I also like is at night, among the tropical breezes and the palm trees are the Christmas lights. One of my favorite sights going to the Caribbean each Christmas Week. St. John didn't disappoint as she brought us to the local holiday lite aficionado. Even without a tour guide, I highly recommend renting a car or a taxi for a day of excursion. If you're a beach person, you may not get far as I lost count of available beaches to enjoy.
