Unless you are training for a POW/MIA rescue missions to Vietnam or Cambodia, I do not recommend this hike. According to "The Hiker's Guide to Oahu" this is a short, pleasant hike along a wide flat trail and perfect for beginners. I'm going to have to call BS on that statement. This hike was 5 miles along a very narrow and very muddy trail, which more often than not ran along the edge of a very steep bank. I surely wouldn't want my kids playing next to it. It was hard to keep any kind of steady pace because of the mud. Keep in mind that it is July and it is NOT the rainy season on Oahu. Had it been the rainy season, I expect that the trail wouldn't have been passable by an otter or beaver.
The trail was easy enough to find. It is located in the Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area located at the end of Aiea Heights Road at the top of the Aiea Heights subdivision. Although the hike proved to be mostly miserable, there were a couple of places that provided a nice view of Pearl Harbor and the H-3. There were no waterfalls or breathtaking views here for a climax. To add insult to injury...just as you break out of the jungle and you think you are home free...you realize that your car is parked about 1/3 mile away at the top of a very steep walk up the blacktop road.
Hike this trail at your own risk...don't believe the guide books.
Happy Hiking.
