Overview

In less than an hour, you can drive to Palmas del Mar. We were unpleasantly surprised that they charged an extra /day to self-park the car. But their shuttle takes you all over the resort. Be sure to see El Yunque. We drove as far as we could on the road from Palmer and hiked Mt. Britton trail where we saw an endangered Puerto Rican Parrot! At dusk we searched for a bioluminescent bay, but the beaches nearby were dirty, crowded, and smelled like sewage. Swimming in the ocean, I started back to shore, but the people got further and further away. Rip tide! I was so exhausted that I cancelled our sailing/snorkeling trip to Vieques. That night, walking along the beach and watching ...Read More

Nice, spacious rooms with balconies. Great staff. Very clean. Casino and several bars in same building, also an adequate restaurant. Nice gardens, and a pleasant walk to the oceanside beach. To take full advantage of this resort, you must take a shuttle to the tennis center/spa, golf course, marina or restaurant complex. A lot of things cost a few dollars extra, so be prepared. (Parking is $10/day, but grounds shuttle is free, and leaves every 1/2 hr.) These folks made me feel right at home. I''d go back in a heartbeat.

La Brochetta

Restaurant

This is a wonderful place, facing the outside of the restaurant complex. A little hard to find, as it's down the corridor from many of the others (inside facing) restaurants, but worth the search. Many of the dishes are served on skewers, hence the name. They have a good wine selection, and a very intimate, romantic setting. The beef is aged angus, cooked to near perfection. We sat on the balcony and listened to the tree frogs. Unfortunately, the balcony faces a security fence, so not much of a view. But the waiters and owner were very accomodating, and the place proved ideal for conversation.

A gem among many fine restaurants at the Palmanova complex! The cuisine is creative and delicious. The chef/owner is a master at presenting the very best, freshest fare in the area, and has a good selection of wines. I had a churasco (skirt steak) with a guava jelly/vinagrette sauce that blew my mind. It was as tender as a filet, and the perfectly balanced sauce did not hide the taste of the lean beef. My girlfriend had the best Red Snapper we had in Puerto Rico, which is saying something, as daily catch and perfect preparation are the rule, not the exception. Excellent drinks too. The owner is not stingy with the alcohol, and the coladas and marguaritas are perfectly balanced. Locals frequen...Read More

If you are staying at the Doral Hotel, this your most convenient option. Service is good, and the food is pretty good too. The food is neither as good nor creative as what you may find at Aji or La Brochetta, but portions are large and satisfying. Another plus is that you don't have to take the shuttle to the Palmanova restaurant complex, as with the other two. The continental breakfast is pricey at $10 per person, but it has a great selection of fresh fruits, breads and juices. We liked all the waiters and waitresses, who easily engaged in conversation and met our needs without lurking over our table. Very comfortable atmosphere, and right next to the swimming pool.

O.K., it's a little out of the way (if you take the coast road from SJ, it's nearly to Croabas/Fajardo). But this is one place you can't afford to miss. If you're staying in San Juan, you'll probably have to rent a car. Admission is $3.00. There are tours, but they will greatly restrict your opportunity to explore. (This is no place to be in a rush.) We took the Mt. Britton trail (moderately strenuous, but only a couple of miles long). It had lots of ancient tree ferns and orchids. You'll probably want to stop at Las Cocas falls (right on rt. 191), and if you take a tour you should go to Las Minas Falls, so you can swim. Wear a swimsuit under your clothes if you go to las Minas. Trail...Read More

Attraction

This attractive, medium sized casino offers low limit (5-$500) table games and the usual slots. The dealers were friendly enough, and the waiters occasionally brought non alcoholic drinks and even little sandwiches to the customers. They apparently respect the no alcohol in the casino rule, which is pretty much ignored in most of the San Juan casinos. Pit bosses/Managers resisted giving "Comps" for meals, and acted like the money was coming out of their own pockets. They kept a craps table fully staffed one night and not a single customer played (2x odds). However, when I was on a serious winning streak at baccarat, they closed the table on me, saying they needed to open it for blackjack. They o...Read More
