During our family trip to Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, we followed a suggestion in the Tokyo guidebook to try Kamakura and Enoshima for a relaxing foray outside of Tokyo. It seems like these two places are commonly known as great destinations. The kids didn't like Kamakura too much. I think that the two boys are a little "templed-out" after Yaesukuni and Meiji. The second half of the day was spent on the island of Enoshima nearby. We hiked around and explored for a few hours around this paradise.
One pleasant surprise that we had was finding a genuine, bona fide NY pizzeria right on this island full of Japanese temples and gardens! The cook was an American from New York City. His pizza was absolutely delicious and the service was wonderfully friendly. My boys really liked a break from Japanese food (and so did I, truth be told). The price was also unlike anything else in japan, and by that I mean it wasn't an arm and a leg to feed my family a nice satisfying lunch. The view was very nice, too.
I recommend a trip to Enoshima to anyone visiting Japan. The added bonus of inexpensive good eats only sweetens the deal.
