We exchanged into a one-bedroom one-bath unit. My husband and I were traveling with our 15 year old daughter. The resort was pretty quiet this week and the local attractions were just opening daily signifying the first week of summer. The resort is a week behind the others as the recreation center is only open until 8pm weeknights this week but will open until 10pm the next week. This was disappointing. I would think if the area attractions were on the summer schedule then the resort should be too. This week is considered peak but they are operating as an off week.

The pool and hot tub are inside and there are two exercise rooms, one with weights and one with cardio equipment. You need a key to get into the exercise rooms. To get the key you need to leave your rec pass. Rec passes are only available to those 16 or older. Anyone younger needs someone 18 or over to be present with them. Upstairs there is Wi-Fi access (no computers), a ping pong table and pool table. .25 for pool, for ping pong you buy the ball and either rent or borrow the paddles. Same with the tennis courts outside. This area is not air conditioned and got very hot. There are doors out to the upper deck but you are not allowed to go in and out, or open, these doors. Signs say an alarm will go off. There are closed circuit security cameras in the various areas where the front desk can watch out. Not sure why all the security. It was an inconvenience to have to walk downstairs and back up outside to get to the upper deck. They should have at least one set of doors open but I think they are afraid someone will get in without signing in. In that case I would think they could set up doors to only open from the inside.

I rated this resort 7.5 since it would be nicer if they had boats/bikes to rent. We would see what else is available but would not object to staying here again when we return to the area.

Quick Tips:

The lake is clean and good for swimming. I would recommend bringing a float or not motorized boat for recreation. These are allowed but not available for use unless you bring your own. It is a small lake more the size of what you would think of as a pond. There is a grill area near the lake. We did not use it but it appears you need the staff to turn it on for you. I’m not sure if they have grilling utensils available; there are none in the units. There are also small charcoal grills behind the units with picnic tables.

If possible bring some groceries with you. This is a one grocery town with not much else in the area. The grocery store was ok but prices were high and selections limited.

There are vacation brochures available in the lobby but check out NH travel sites on the web for ideas of what to do.

North Conway outlets are about 35 minutes away and a nice trip on the Kangkamagus (sp) highway.

We found out that not all units are set up the same way as a friend, my daughter met there, said they did not have a fireplace in their unit. RCI exchangers don't have any option to change rooms at the resort. Any updates need to go through RCI.

Searching for Deer Park on the Internet will bring up rental options from other owners there if you want to rent vs exchange. There appeared to be many rental or ownership options by the look of the offers on the owner board. I would imagine you could call the resort for assistance with these options.

Best Way To Get Around:

You need to have a car to enjoy the area although in the winter there is a shuttle to the ski area.

Bring kayaks/canoes if you have them or inflatable rafts/floats for the lake.

Only three of the buildings are RCI buildings. All are privately owned. From what we were able to tell, the smallest ownership is a quartershare where you own every fourth week. These are the ones you have the ability to deposit with RCI.
Our unit was on a lower level where you walked down from the main entry level. This was not good for noise as we had young children running above us all week. We woke up to pounding feet every morning and heard screaming one night. We did have a deck that was on ground level as the building is set on a hill. We looked out to woods and a small stream.

Entering the unit, the bedroom and bathroom were in a hall to the right. There is a washer and dryer in a closet across from the bathroom which was nice. I thought we were going to have to use a laundry room so this was a nice surprise. There is no towel service, probably since you have the washer. Detergent is available at the rec center for $.75. We purchased ours at the grocery store.

Continuing into the one remaining room in the unit is the open kitchen/dining/living area. The sofa couch was not comfortable and you had to sleep with your head downhill or sleep or with your head at the foot of the bed. There was a gas fireplace that we used on the first couple nights when it was cooler. Air conditioning was hotel-like in the wall off the living room. Nights in the bedroom could get sticky as it was hard for the a/c to get around the corner and down the hall.
The master bedroom was good sized with a king sized bed, double closet and dresser. The bathroom had a nice whirl pool bath and a separate shower (that leaked onto the floor). The bathroom was average sized.

Overall the resort and units were well maintained; nothing fancy. The kitchen had plenty of pots/pans and bake ware. A shortcoming was that the large skillet was not non-stick and was thin so burned and smoked up the unit easily. There was a microwave over the stove and a dishwasher. They provided dish washing and dishwasher detergent. Extra paper towels, toilet paper and tissues were provided as well as soap. No shampoo or hair dryer although they stated you could get a hair dryer at the rec center (which is also the front desk).

Check in was quick but the staff were hit or miss as to being helpful and/or friendly. You need to sign in with a recreation pass every time you visit the rec center. This is where all amenities are located. The building is next to the beach (which is open until 9pm). The shallow area is roped off and you can swim out past the ropes to a float. Lounge chairs are located along the beach.

Seven Seas Seafood Restaurant

A sign for lobster dinner for $12.95 caught my daughter’s eye; a small eat in fast food-type seafood restaurant – Seven Seas Seafood Restaurant. We stopped there another night and got wonderful fried seafood for reasonable prices. They have picnic tables outside or you could eat inside. We recommend the lobster, fried clam strips, and fried sea scallops. The $12.95 was for a one pound lobster and twin one pounds were $24.95. Other fried seafood was available in side orders, baskets, or meals. We got meals that night and came back the next night for side orders.

There appear to be a number of Common Man restaurants in NH but they all look like they had different menus.This particular one looked like it was an old house redone into a restaurant. Santa's Village

We drove up to Santa’s Village so my Santa crazed husband could revisit a child hood attraction.

They have great fudge there. Also be sure to visit the place that sells freshly made ginger bread cookies. You frost them yourself. We went through that twice!

It was not too expensive and although my daughter was bored, we had an OK time. We got our pictures taken on one of the rides and had snow globes made up for Christmas gifts for the grand parents.

All rides allow grown ups on them although they are geared toward kids. Some do have height requirements.

Flume Gorge

The link above has a lot of information. We took the hike through Flume Gorge one hot day and it was nice and cool here. The walk has a lot of hills and although we did see someone with a cane walking it, it is not easy. For hikers it would be considered easy though. All fully cleared gravel or wood walkways. Stairs in areas. This was a nice hike for us.

After visiting here we went to Echo Lake which had a small beach. We actually liked the lake back at the resort better and would probably not go to the lake again if we were staying at Deer Park.

We ate a quick dinner at Friendly’s just before the crowds started arriving at 5pm. As we left, we noticed there was a wait.
