Stopping by Montauk

Overview

The town itself is rather small, but there is plenty to do. On any given night, you see couples and families out enjoying the cool air while playing mini golf or enjoying a nighttime boat ride on the lake in a peddle boat or sail boat. The Main Street is fully equipped with restaurants and shopping interests, and of course the famed Memory Motel, the inspiration of the Rolling Stones' song. Beyond the main strip is the luxurious dock of Gosman's and then of course the Montauk Lighthouse. There is enough to do in Montauk, along with the beaches, to keep you busy for a long time.Quick Tips: Throughout the summer, there are plenty of events throughout the town, like the book fair over 4th of Jul...Read More

Fishbone

Restaurant

Quote:
I was out visiting my parents over the weekend in Montauk and we went out for dinner the last day I was there. Out on East Lake Drive just past the town center of Montauk is this Italian-influenced waterfront restaurant, Fishbone. The restaurant was conveniently located on the water but inconveniently located next to the Montauk Airport. The menu was small and half of the food wasn’t available, although that might have been because it was Sunday night. The food was mediocre and the price was a little much, although the fried zucchini appetizer made it all worth while. They were served up in an actual brown bag, which was rolled up with nothing but grease soaking the bottom of the bag as if the ba...Read More

After a day at the beach, or a night playing mini golf at Puff n Putt, an ice cream cone at John's Drive In is the perfect compliment. Located right across the street from the famed Memory Motel, John's is a great place from some real homemade ice cream. After walking through the streets (really one street in the center of town) my girlfriend and I were craving ice cream and made our way to John's. The crowds here come in waves and sometimes you can be the first or second served, and other times, you can be waiting until the end of time itself. Luckily, when we went, the crowds were just crossing the street from the beach, so we were helped right away. Now, all of the hard ice cream tha...Read More

Montauk Point Lighthouse

Situated right on the eastern end of Long Island, the Montauk Lighthouse is one of most recognizable fixtures of the east end. Open year round, the museum and tower tour are a real interesting sight and worth the stop. At around $7 per person, $6 for kids, the tour includes a walk through the museum part and then the lofty 137-stair climb to the top of the tower. The museum has three or four small replicas of the layout of the lighthouse and the surrounding property from the year of its inception to present day. The amount of beach and cliff erosion is astounding. More than half of the protective land around the lighthouse has been eroded away weather changes and pollution. It's crazy...Read More

Ditch Plains Beach

Attraction

Quote:
What used to be a secret among the locals, Ditch Plains has made its way into the tourist books as the best beach for surfing and with good reasons. While I was growing up, Ditch Plains was the place we went to to surf and watch the pros out in the deeper waters. Unfortunately, as the summer hurricane seasons got worse, the beaches were slowly eaten away by erosion. The town then stepped up and placed old cement slabs down, then sand on top, therefore slowing the erosion process. The swells here are amazing, the waves are awesome. Almost year round, there is a sandbar everyday. The surfers here are very territorial and if you get in their way they will cut by you to...Read More

Memory Motel & Bar

Attraction | "Memory Motel"

Memory Motel & Bar Photo, Montauk, New York
Quote:
The Memory Motel, the inspiration for the Rolling Stones, is located right in the center of town. It is said that, when the Stones were hanging at Andy Warhol's place down the street, they would head to the Memory because of the pool table and piano. The motel has since capitalized on the Stones stay and remade the bar into a small, musically-friendly establishment. With random local bands playing the small stage almost every weekend night, this places parties hard until the sun is almost up. The pool table is still there and the Stone's memorabilia is on the border of being overdone. The bar itself is situated in the center of the still-used motel with rooms flanking each side. Wi...Read More
