When I was on a traveling job throughout the South and Midwest a couple of years back, I happened upon this small town in Georgia called Athens, where one of the campuses of The University of Georgia is located. We ended up staying at the Holiday Inn (http://www.trails.com/all-hotels/hotel-info.asp?hotelid=16414) on Broad Street in the center of the city and this place was perfect. As we drove from Atlanta to Athens, I was expecting some Podunk town with hay bails flying around. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This town was great! It was like a refugee camp for fun, cool people who were escaping the drawl of southern life. Back to the Holiday Inn though; the beds were comfy, the rooms were spacious and, here is the kicker, there was water pressure in the shower (a rarity, I have found, in the South). At around $125 per night, it was well worth the stay because you are never any more than a 10-minute walk from whatever bars you stumbled into back to your hotel. And the bars and restaurants around here are to die for. With most places supplying live music for no cover and drinks at a fraction of what they were in Atlanta, Athens keeps getting better and better. Plus the southern barbecue is extraordinary and cheap! So, make a trip down to Athens, experience this haven of fun, food, and entertainment and sleep it all of at the Holiday Inn on Broad Street.
