Shangri-La is a rustic, comfortable, unique experience. If you are looking for a pristine, air-conditioned, concrete box, this is definitely not what you want. This is no "Ritz". At the Shangri-La, everyone stays in individual "huts" right on the white sand beach. My family and I recently returned from a week-long vacation at this resort. My husband and I have visited this lovely hotel several times in the past 12 years after discovering it in National Geographic Traveler magazine. Don't use ExpressCar Rental! They have offices in Cancun at the Caretera Cancun-Aeropuerto and in Playa del Carmen in el Centro. They were recommended to us by staff at our hotel at Shangri-La Caribe. They said they could get us a "good deal" on a van rental so we could spend the day driving to Coba and Tulum. This was our biggest mistake we made on our vacation. It turned into a nightmare. Express car rental was very misleading, dishonest, and were scam artists. I wish we had gone with a US chain like Avis or just about any other legitimate company! We have rented from Avis in Mexico before, and although it was more expensive, we had no problems.
