Freedom Rock

One of the most unusual and touching memorials to the men and women of the US Armed Forces lies just outside of Des Moines, IA. A forty mile drive west of Des Moines on I-80 lies Freedom Rock. A project which was started in 1999 by artist Ray Sorensen, aka Bubba, has become a yearly ritual and has been attracting thousands of tourists each year. One mile south of Exit 86 on Highway 25 stands a massive rock artfully decorated on all sides with murals depicting different scenes related to the Armed Forces. The murals on the rock are changed each year which encourages tourists to revisit the site. My visit to the rock was in 2012. In that year, one side of the rock depicted a scene of t...Read More

Overview

State Capitol Photo, Des Moines, Iowa

This is my first journey to the state of Iowa, otherwise known as the “Hawkeye State”, which is located in the Midwest. Iowa is a very rural state comprised mainly of farmlands and their famous crop, corn. If you find yourself in Iowa, there are plenty of things to do around the state; you just have to find them. There is the Great Mississippi River of the Quad cities to the Capital City of Des Moines, and even further west to the city of Council Bluffs. I started my trip in Des Moines, the capital and largest city in Iowa located in the heart of the state. My first stop was the State Capitol located along the Des Moines River. It towers over the city with its enormous dome covered in 23 carat...Read More

If you ever need a place to eat while you are in Des Moines, Iowa, look no further than Stella’s Blue Sky Diner. The restaurant originally opened up in 1988 in downtown Des Moines and now they can be found in Urbandale, one of the many suburbs of the capital city. Their motto is "Get Lost in the '50s." Stepping into Stella’s is like stepping into a black and white episode of I Love Lucy turned color. The walls are decorated with signs from the '50s highlighting shows such as The Andy Griffith Show and I Love Lucy as well as hit movies such as From Here to Eternity. The fifties era is even recreated down to the outfits with the waitresses wearing the red and white checkered dresses and the waiters with...Read More

The Iowa State Fair is held every year in Des Moines in early August for ten days. I was able to attend the 2006 State Fair which was held August 10-20. This was my first trip to the Iowa State Fair after having visited the North Carolina State Fair almost every year of my life. When I first entered the fair grounds after paying my $10, the first place we stopped at was an animal zoo. I rode a camel to the amusement of my wife after she begged. After the camel ride, we followed the crowd to where the Iowa State Police were putting on a repelling demonstration from a six story building. My wife made sure that I did not miss any of the great highlights which make the Iowa State Fair such a great...Read More

Vermeer Windmill Photo, Pella, Iowa
Quote:
Iowa is known for its many small towns, but there is one that stands out among all of them. Pella is a town of less than 10,000 people located about 45 minutes away from Des Moines. The city has a Dutch feel to it which it could probably be explained by the Vermeer Windmill that cast a shadow over the town. The Vermeer Windmill is a fully functional windmill that reaches 134 feet tall. The windmill was built in Holland and assembled in Pella. It is the tallest working windmill in the United States. Tours are offered to visitors who once inside can witness the grinders hard at work turning wheat into flour. The windmill is not the only thing that gives this town a unique Dutch atmosphere. Is this Heaven? No it’s Iowa. This is the famous line from the movie Field of Dreams. Filmed in 1989, the movie features Kevin Costner, Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones, and Burt Lancaster in his last movie appearance. For those who have never seen the movie, it is about a farmer who hears voices that he should build a baseball diamond in his cornfield. After building the field against the wishes of everyone around him, the eight players of the 1919 White Sox who were banned from baseball crossed over from the cornfield in the outfield to play baseball on his field. The movie went on to be nominated for Academy Awards for Best Music, Original Score, Best Writing, and Best Picture. The movie wa...Read More
