Brighton Rocks

A July 2001 trip to Brighton by Chelle

On a rainy Saturday afternoon, we couldn't think of anything better to do than drive the couple of hours down to the south coast. I've never heard a bad thing about Brighton, so I thought it was about time I checked it out.. the verdict? Brighton rocks!

Overview

Walk through the 'Lanes'; shop 'til you drop in the most wonderful streets full of groovy boutiques and grab coffee in one of a hundred bars and cafes. Walk along the seafront, listen to the seagulls, check out the world- famous pier and the fair rides or visit the spectacular Pavillion. At night Brighton comes alive, so look up what's happening, pick your poison and head out for a night on the town.

Quick Tips:

Parking is a nightmare in Brighton. I would recommend leaving the car at home and jumping on the train, but if you can't live without the motor, do think about where you might be able to park in advance. Fancy hotels might have their own parking facilities, but the numerous B&B's and guest houses are in small streets with permit-only parking. We parked in one of the multi-storey car parks in the centre of town which are very convenient but pricey. A 24-hour stay works out cheapest at £11.60, but by the hour prices start at around £1.10 per hour.

Best Way To Get Around:

Brighton is big, but not too big to walk to most places you will want to visit. We didn't need to get far, so didn't check out the buses. There are always taxis too of course.
This place is £49.95 per night per room, so two sharing makes it relatively inexpensive. It''t perhaps not 5* to a discerning traveller, but to a budget backpacker its relative luxury! Facilities include TV, ensuite bathroom and phone, can''t say fairer than that?!

Parking is at the NCP car park nearby and costs £11.60 overnight (24 hours).

Attraction

Much the same as Walkabouts all over the country, this Aussie bar serves all your favourite cold aussie beers, unavailable in other bars and complete with toilets marked as 'dunnies' the decor is typical of a tacky theme bar.

But with Aboriginal paintings, kangaroo signposts and other aussie memorabilia adorning the walls, great bands and the best crowds of people, this place has everything for a great night on the town.. especially popular with hen and stag parties, so 'L' plates and veils are almost part of the dress code.
