Holiday weekend trip.

Holiday Inn Capitol

It was very clean and close to National Mall. There were only two of four elevators working, so there were long queues at certain times of the day. No pool and concrete courtyard, but you probably won't be there long anyway. This is not the side of town with a lot of dining choices but it is a short walk across the mall up 7th Street for many more choices. Parking garage across the street is cheaper than hotel parking lot ($17 vs $23). It's fun to watch train come through on tracks behind.

Capitol City Brewing Company

It's a nice bar in refurbished warehouse, a bit noisy but the beer was good and not too expensive. The food looked good but we didn't eat. Busy lunchtime crowd. Copper sheets on bar were a nice touch. It's a good place for refreshment after getting out of Union Station. Look for Postal Museum, that's where the bar is.

Others have praised this place and I agree. Very nice experience. Don't expect typical large American portions, but don't let that stop you from trying something new. You can always go across to the Starbucks later if you're still hungry.

The Dubliner Pub

This is a typical Irish bar. The baked cod was very good, prime rib came overcooked and dampened our good mood. They have good beer and service. You could crawl between Dubliner and Irish Times if you had too, not that I recommend that.

Kelly's Irish Times

There are nice shaded tables outside where you can sit and watch the world go by. The interior looks and smells like and Irish pub, not a tourist trap. Nice people and cold beer. The fish and chips were a bit greasy.

This is a nice place to visit on your way to the zoo or on your way back. Typical Irish pub with friendly staff. On the back side of the block. Sit outside and look at the leafy trees.

It's a nice bakery on ground floor of USDA building. The building wasn't open on Memorial weekend but we persevered and had nice panini (ham and egg on panini bread) for breakfast Tuesday and Wednesday. Nice selection of baked goods and very strong coffee. It appears that fine dining, or at least lunch is available across the hall; look for the "after hours" sign.

This is a nice place for baked goods and light breakfast. I couldn't find the 706 L'Enfant Plaza SW location, but did find one near C Street NW. Their website lists about 12 locations in D.C. so there should be one near you.

Wonderful authentic food. This is a great place for dinner after a day at the zoo. Service was a bit slow but when the food starts coming you forget about everything else. Sit at tables outside and watch the people go by.

National Air and Space Museum

It's worth the time, even if only marginally interested in air/space exploration since other topics are represented. For example, Archie Bunker's chair is there since its museum (Amer. Hist.?) is being renovated.

D.C. Trip

Experience

D.C. is friendly and it is very easy to get around on the Metro. Metro is clean and safe. Protect your Metrorail farecard; ours seemed to get demagnetized easily and the Metro official at Metro Center wasn't very helpful. When researching restaurants you should try to determine if they are in office buildings and understand they probably won't be open on the weekends. We could not find a bar in Dupont Circle. Man, has that place changed in 15 years.
