The Netherlands

Overview

Holland Casino in Breda Photo, Breda, Netherlands
Quote:
Breda is a city in the southern part of The Netherlands, near Belgium. Breda has different neighborhoods like Ginneken, Princenhage, de Haagse Beemden, Zandberg, and many more. The city center is filled with beautiful old historic buildings (like The Dutch Royal Military Academy). It’s a joy to see these houses and churches inside and outside. Not only old buildings are worth a visit; you will also find modern architecture (for example the Chassé Theatre). You can go by car or by public transport to Breda. It’s very easily and a short walk from the train station to the city center. If you come by car, there are many parking lots/parking garages. You can learn the history of Breda or you can sp...Read More

The Corenmaet is an informal café and restaurant. It’s located on the corner of the ‘Havenmarkt’ (a square). It’s a very popular place and well known in Breda. I come here very often. The reason why is the atmosphere and the location in the summer. It’s great to sit outside on the terrace of the Corenmaet. Live music is included in the summer months! The interior is dark brown with a wooden floor. The restaurant has a Grand-Café style; something you see very often in The Netherlands. The tables are big enough for four people. Is your group more than four people? No problem, they always search for a solution. There is one larger table in the middle of the restaurant. It’s more of a r...Read More

Brooklyn Breda is a bar with a very trendy style. Brooklyn reminds me of a club in New York. The interior is modern, lounge style. This popular spot is favorite by tourists and locals. They have a large selection of cocktails. It’s a combination of a club/restaurant. During the day they serve lunch, drinks, and afternoon snacks. In the evening they serve dinner until 10pm / 10:30pm. Than the music gets louder and the crowd is changing. Thursday night and Saturday night is the night to hang out here. Some of my favorites:Appetizers:- Bread with olive oil, ‘tapenade,’ and garlic sauce- Sushi- Antipasta- Goat cheese with tomato and ‘tapenade’...Read More

A little bit of Spain near the center of the Breda. Sol y Sombra (formerly known as Tapa Rita) is a nice tapas restaurant and has a Spanish kitchen. It’s a small, cozy, and informal restaurant. It makes you feel you are in a local restaurant in Spain. The menu has a large variety of tapas. You can choose from 60 different tapas. We had a wonderful evening. From the moment we had our first drink to the end when we get the check, it was all perfect. The ‘pan con aioli’ (bread with aioli) is one of their specialties and is very tasteful. This was just the beginning of a chain of delicious tapas. Other good tapas were Mejillones Catalana (mussels in a s...Read More

Humphrey’s is located on the corner of Catharina Street and Kasteelplein. It’s close, almost near the Military Academy. Here you can have a three course meal for 19 euros. The formula is simple. You can choose from six appetizers, about seven entrées, and six desserts. This is what I had recently:- Carpaccio with pesto, old Parmesan cheese, and ‘pijnboompitten.’- Mixed grill, three pieces of meat with garlic sauce and cocktail sauce. - Sandwich of melon marinated in white wine, in combination with mango ice cream. It was all very tasteful and well prepared. Humphrey’s is a restaurant chain in The Netherlands for over 16 years. The ...Read More

Last Friday was a one of the last days that we were able to eat outside. The weather was perfect and it was our first visit to this restaurant. The location of restaurant Luden is perfect. It’s located at the ‘Vismarkt’ (the name of the street is Fish market), across the historical Spanjaardsgat. Luden has a pleasant, friendly staff. The tables outside are small but ok for two persons. The restaurant inside is separated in a fine dine area and a bistro. You can choose from the ‘bistro’ menu or ‘dinner’ menu. Dinner menu is a three-course menu of your choice (€ 26,50). The menu varied to suit most tastes.I had the grilled skewer of lamb with fries and salad (€13,50). My boyfrien...Read More

The KMA (Royal Military Academy) is situated at the castle build in 1350. Since 1828 the KMA has the castle in use as a academy. The old traditions of a military Academy are well kept here. It’s a beautiful place and you must see it if you have the change. Scheduled tours are given through the buildings of the castle of Breda. A guide will tell you all about the important things there is to know about the castle and KMA. I never take the tour, because my boyfriend (officer of the Royal Netherlands Air Force) had his study here to become an officer of the Air Force. This place is beautiful. The inner court of the castle has Spanish influences. The scenery is fantastic. The citypark Valke...Read More

Breda is also known for its Jazz festival. This event is held every year in May. During this festival you’ll hear and see all aspects of jazz and great jazz musicians. For four days Breda is changing into a jazz city. It’s just one swinging, jazz happening. Musicians from all over the world are coming to Breda to perform. In the city center of Breda are stages and throughout the day visitors can enjoy the sounds of jazz. Most of the performances are free, like the outdoor stages in the city center. For the big stars you can go to the theatre. For the indoor concerts you have to buy a ticket. I don’t know exactly how much they cost. You’ll find the outdoor stages in the middle of the ‘Grote Mar...Read More

High Tea at Dickens and Jones

Story/Tip

Quote:
Dickens & Jones is located at the ‘Grote Markt’, in the center of the city. The style of the interior is ‘Old English’. Dark brown furniture with book-shelves and typical English home decorations. It’s the perfect environment to have a High Tea. In the summer you can sit outside, because they have a terrace in front of the restaurant. It was on a Sunday when we had the high tea. We had 13 people in our group. Our table wasn’t ready when we arrived. That wasn’t correct, because our reservation was made a long time ago. So we waited in the restaurant. They never offered us something to drink while we were waiting. So far, not so good! Finally the table was ready! It was...Read More

Shopping in BredaWhen I go shopping, I always choose Breda. It’s close to where I live, but most important Breda is a great place to shop. You’ll find all major brands here (European and Dutch Brands). There is one large, big shopping street where you’ll find most of the shops. This street has many side streets with again many shops. Breda has one mall, called the "Barones". You’ll find the entrance of the mall in the same large shopping street. There are more than 60 shops in the "Barones". Some of them are specialty shops like "Oil & Vinegar." In this store you can taste and buy many kinds of oil, spices cooking books from all over the world, and much more. Etten-Leur, the city where Vincent Van Gogh lived and started drawing.Etten-Leur, you're probably thinking, "what kind of town is this?" Well, it’s a small town near Breda and it has something to do with Vincent van Gogh. In every important large museum all over the world, you’ll find paintings by Vincent van Gogh. Therefore, I’m proud that he lived in Etten-Leur and painted some remarkable spots in my hometown. Too bad some of these historic spots have disappeared over the years.
