Shopping in London

Overview

Quote:
Too many to mention! Many tourists go to Harrods just to see it, as it's now practically a tourist site as well as a big department store. One of my personal favourites is Liberty, off Regent Street, which is a luxury haven of wonderful things. For books, head to the Charing Cross Road, for elegant clothes, Bond Street, and for knick-knacks, Covent Garden. Oxford Street is the main place to go in the centre of town for high-street shopping, and the shops there tend to stay open later than most others as well. Quick Tips: London is a city you walk in a lot - and jump on and off public transport. Sensible shoes for walking are therefore a good move. It can rain in London at most times of year, ...Read More

John Lewis

John Lewis is an usuasual chain of shops, in that it is run by and owned by those who work there. They generally sell high quality stuff and employ well trained staff, and their slogan is "Never knowingly undersold" - if you can show you could have bought the same thing cheaper elsewhere, they refund the difference. The shop in Oxford Street is huge - on the ground floor are many luxuary cosmetics and perfume counters, and the whole area smells lovely (-: All the international top brands such as Christian Dior and Yves St. Laurent are there, and some English brands, such as Floris, that are very good but harder to find. On other floors are a big dressmaking and haberdashery department,...Read More

This is the place to go for books, old or new. IN the new category, there are several choices - Foyles, Waterstones, and Books Etc. Foyles is an odd place - it has almost every book you might want, but you have to *find* it first. They file books by odd things such as publisher, rather than sensibly by author / subject. This can make it hard to get what you are looking for. It is a good place to browse, though, as there is such a comprehensive range. Waterstones and Books Etc, which are chains with branches all over the UK, are much more user friendly. They carry fewer items than Foyles, I believe, but have most things you might want. Waterstones have a better selection of serious aca...Read More

Liberty is wonderful. I first came here with my grandmother, who was a dress-maker - they have a terrific haberdashery department on the second floor, full of their own design, delicate cotton floral prints, wonderful silks, and everything you could need for sewing. Liberty specialises in their own prints - you can buy the material on the second floor or buy glasses cases, address books, tissue holders, bags, cushions etc on the ground floor in Liberty print. The shop also sells some ready-made clothes in their own fabrics, but they tend to be for the mature lady buyer rather than to my taste. On the ground floor is an exclusive cosmetics section, including Floris, a small but wonderfu...Read More

M & S is a British institution - every woman in the country buys underwear and socks from here, and every man a few shirts. If you want good quality, well made, and comfortable clothes and shoes, this is the place to go. It's not bargain basement stuff, but it's not really pricey either. Most of their clothes are natural fibres - I've had a couple of really nice, well-fitting cashmere jumpers from here for about 90 pounds each, that have lasted through endless wears. They also do good work type suits, silk shirts, and swimming stuff. One great advantage of clothes from M & S is the washing specifications – they make a real effort to ensure all their stuff can be machine washed and tumbled drie...Read More

This is an amazing, specialist cheese shop. It sells almost English cheese from the British Isles (including Ireland), with varieties you won't have heard of, and variations of old English favourites that you have only tasted in inferior versions. It looks amazing when you walk in - huge wheels of cheddar hanging, different smaller quantities such as Red Leicester, Stilton, and Cheshire all around. They also sell local varieties from around the country, with odd names – Stinking Bishop is one I was reluctant to try, but when I was finally pushed into eating some I found it delicious. The shop is happy to advise you on how to keep your cheeses, what to eat them with, and what kinds of w...Read More

IN 1760, William Hamley founded a shop in High Holborn, selling toys, called Noah’s Ark. His son later added another branch, in the posh new Regent’s Street, which is the flagship today. The most spoilt child in the world could find something over the 7 floors of the shop that he wanted! I was taken here as a child a few times, and it’s a wonderful place to play for an afternoon, even if nothing is purchased. I remember especially well an amazing model train set running over bridges, fields, past shops and houses, with signals, different layers, and wonderful metal engines. There are floors of dolls and dolls clothes, with wonderful dolls’ houses representing every style of architecture a doll coul...Read More

This is the most wonderful travel shop for anyone who has itchy feet - which I imagine means almost everyone reading this! You can buy maps of almost anywhere in the world - when Adam and I were off to Mongolia this was the only place in London which seemed to stock anything other than a postcard-sized map of the whole country. Here, we managed to buy a set of 10 maps which covered the country in the proper detail we needed to get around. They came from old American surveys of the country, and were pretty accurate on the ground, and had precise enough details to make using our GPS to naviagate easy. When we left Mongolia, we were twice offered decent sums of money by travel agents in the capital, who ...Read More
