Quote: Most visitors to the French Riviera come to the reknown coastal towns of Nice, Cannes or Antibes for its beaches, ports and ritzy life-style. But the more frequent visitors and the ones who prefer the atmosphere of medieval towns extend their visits to the perched villages of the "beyond" region.

The "Villages Perche" of the French Riviera

Overview

Quote:
These villages are like no other places we have seen. As soon as we climbed up the numerous steps up to Eze, we could not stop oohing and aahing. Every corner we turn, there were more amazing houses, stairways and alleys. Everything was built out of stone. The place seems unreal. Then there was the view of seaside and the valleys from the high vantage point. After Eze, we became hooked to these stone-built medieval perched villages and could not stop from visiting more: St Paul-en-Vence, Vence, Tourrettes, etc. Driving in this region is thrilling, it is at the same time breathtaking and hair raising on narrow roads with numerous curves and twists up and down mountains and coasts. While visiting Eze on day trip, we noticed that the best photo ops of this enchanting village were of the Chateau de la Chevre d''Or. Upon discovering that it is a hotel, we decided we would, on our next trip, spend a night there for what must be the most romantic experience in an unique hotel setting. Perched between the mountains and the Mediterranean, at 1200 ft. from sea level, in the heart of the tiny medevial village of Eze and one of the most spectacular positions on the Cote d''Azur with views looking out over the coast and Cap Ferrat, the Chateau de la Chevre d''Or is an immensely romantic luxury hotel of 32 rooms and 1 suite. Converted from 11th century houses, which means some bedro...Read More

Eze, St Paul, Tourrettes and Vence are very similar medieval perched villages in the "Beyond" region of the French Rivieras. They all have ancient stone houses, small narrow streets lined with artisanal shops, window boxes overflowed with colorful flowers but my favorite by far is Tourrettes-sur-Loup. The village is the quaintest of all, the least commercialized and above all not overrun with tourists. The stones are not as well washed as Eze, the shops not as plentiful as St. Paul, the village not as overflown with flowers as Vence but, Tourrettes is much more real and private. You almost feel guilty to trespass the sanctuary and disturb the tranquility of its artistic inhabitants. Located ...Read More

Dating back to the 11th Century, from its 60-feet rocky outcrop, the medieval village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence lies nestled in scenic foothills, between mountains and sea, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea on the world renowned French Riviera. St Paul stretches over 1.700 acres, with a population of 3,000 inhabitants, 300 of which live within the village. A beautiful medieval fortified village perched on a narrow spur between two deep valleys, St. Paul enchants its visitors with the splendor of its view and the charm of its rich cultural and artistic heritage. Lose yourself in the maze of charming streets, the floral exuberance of the gardens, the little shady squares, ancient fountains, gateway...Read More

Sitting besides the Moyenne Corniche, in between Nice and Monaco, the picturesque village of Eze is, in my opinion, a "must see" for visitors to the French Riviera. The village is so beautiful, it's hard to believe you have not stumbled onto a movie set! Perched in an "eagle's nest" on the top of a superb cliff, the village and its light ochre church can be seen from afar. Park your car in the small lot at the foot of the cliff and climb up the rocky path with the splendid view of the gardens surrounding the Château de la Chèvre d'Or. At the end of the steps is a small village filled with charm and colourful window boxes, offering a panoramic view of the sea and coast-line. Superbly restore...Read More

Transportation in the Beyond region

Story/Tip

Quote:
Train and bus are inexpensive and frequent between the coastal cities of the French Riviera. Rail transportation is especially easy if your destination is on the Nice-Monaco-Menton-Ventimiglia line. Bus between Nice-Villefranche-Eze(sur-Mer)-Monaco-Menton offers free returns. There are at least 2 different lines running this route so make sure you board the same line on your return trip if you want to take advantage of the discount. Once you go further inland, both the rail and bus services are at best spotty, at worst non-existent. So if you intend to visit the villages in the Beyond region, be sure to reserve your car from your country of departure. It is much cheaper that way. If you ne...Read More
