My family and I visited Phuket in April 2007. We found Phuket a very nice place for vacation but the biggest mistake I made was choosing Surin Beach Hotel. The hotel had a lot of bugs, especially mosquitoes, but it did not offer any anti-insect devices or repellent. The room I was given was smelly. The smell came from the sewage tanks just outside my room's door. The hotel staff was impolite and impatient if a guest made special requests. My unpleasant experience concerned ordering breakfast to be sent to my room. When I asked a reception staff whether I could have my breakfast sent to my room, the answer was in the affirmative. However, I later discovered that I had to pay for such service. If I had been informed of the charge, I would not mind paying. However, the reception staff did not mention anything about charges, nor did the menu inside my room mention them. When I sought clarification with that reception staff, she told me in a haughty manner that every hotel in Phuket charged guests for breakfasts brought to guestrooms. Even five-star hotels did so. What she implied was that I should know the unlisted charges of the hotel, which I found extremely annoying. I had lodged in hotels in other countries and I had never been charged for breakfasts taken to my room. This experience was really an eye-opener. However, the hotel should be responsible for telling its guests the service charges. It is a form of malpractice if hotels charge guests unlisted fees. So, if you are considering Surin Beach Resort, just be careful what service you request. Ask for prices.
There is another thing about the hotel's room service. When I ordered breakfast in my room, they often missed things, such as coffee, sugar, milk or a combination of these. I had to call room service again to have them sent. This happened three out of four times.
