Prague is a city full of highlights for any lover of history and architecture. Since throwing open its doors to tourism after the fall of communism, it's gained a reputation as a place for stag and hen parties, a weekend get-away for those looking for cheap beer and a good time. Now, I'm sure you can find all of that here, but I think this reputation does Prague a great disservice. There is so much more to see than a bunch of rowdy men and women getting lit in the local pubs. In fact, we enjoyed one of our best family holidays ever with our 12-year-old son. Walking up Petrin Hill in the springtime when the trees were heavy with white blossoms, wandering the old fortress of Vysehrad, wa...Read More

We booked a room for two adults and a child at the House at the Big Boot, which is run by an absolutely fabulous Czech family in Prague's Mala Strana (Castle District.) We could not have been made to feel more welcome during our stay in Prague. Upon arrival to the hundreds-year old house, we were met at the front door and given a warm reception in English. Thomas escorted us up the narrow staircase to where we would sleep: a spacious room with a rolled-in, single bed for our son. I quickly hung my things in an antique wardrobe as my husband opened the windows that overlooked a small back garden. It was cool, crisp weather on that first afternoon, but a radiator allowed u...Read More

While we loved walking around Vysehrad on a sunny afternoon, it was April. We were in the Czech Republic. It was a bit chilly to sit and eat outside. So we abandoned the cafes near the church, walked by the dungeon, through the fortress walls, and followed a sign promising we'd find a restaurant at the bottom of the hill. We ended up at Usemika, a small restaurant offering Czech cuisine. We were ushered through the small entryway with a bar to one side and into a cozy room lined with books. I amused myself looking at the spines while our waiter got our menus. There was a wide range of titles: Karl Marx on one shelf, Mario Puzo on another! Our table was under a stone archway. A heavy...Read More

Close to the American Embassy, we ate dinner at Citanes based on a recommendation from our hotel. When we first walked in the door, we saw that the smokey front room with the bar was completely full except for a table with a tented "reserved" sign perched on top. Disappointed, we were about to turn around and leave, but a polite host quickly stopped us and ushered us into a cozy back room where he found an empty table for three. Here the chairs were all covered in different patterned fabric. The flowered tablecloths had striped place mats. The walls were hung with richly colored paintings and knitted curtains hung at the windows. Roses were painted onto the arched ceiling. ...Read More

We liked Olympia so much, we ate here twice. Very reasonably priced, the menu offers something for everyone but emphasized traditional Czech cuisine. The owner of our hotel originally sent us to Olympia to try the Suickova, a sirloin in cream sauce with cranberries. Served with a type of dumpling to sop up all that decadent liquid, it was delicious. But I'm getting ahead of myself. First, let's talk about the decor. Olympia has super high and plastered ceilings, hardwood floors, salmon colored walls, dark green accents, coat racks for all that extra clothing you need to shed after coming in from a cold Prague night, and tall windows. It's popular with locals and t...Read More

Petrin Hill Observation Tower

Petrin Hill is a wonderful place to visit with kids. A church was here as early as the Middle Ages, but the attractions built for a Jubilee Exhibition in 1891 are the main draws for families. You can hop a ride on a funicular to get to the top, but we decided to walk up a winding path, the sunlight warm on our cheeks, the trees alive with white spring blossoms. By the time we reached the top of the hill, the observation tower had opened. For a nominal charge, we were able to go inside and climb to the top of this miniature version of the Eiffel Tower from Paris. We were rewarded with outstanding views of Prague. Since we were there early, we were also fairly undisturbed by crowds, so we could ...Read More

On a beautiful afternoon, we got in a queue at the National Museum. High ceilings and pretty architecture aside, none of us could get really excited about seeing more artifacts or art or anything else inside a building. Now, I'm quite sure the National Museum is a nice place, but with one look that showed we were all thinking the exact same thing, we quickly ditched it and got a ride on the metro to an ancient fort instead... to the foundations of the tenth century settlement called Vysehrad. Here - legend says - a Czech Princess once predicted a great city rising out of the endless forest of trees she could see below her... a city with enough beauty to rival the stars. Gazing down upo...Read More

While walking around the Old Town, we saw a small exhibit for Franz Kafka. It was cheap and small and not worth very much. Not that I'm a huge Kafka fan, but he IS a pretty major writer. What a let down. So, when we happened to walk in a different direction towards the heart of the Mala Strana district and saw the new Kafka museum--behind a hilarious fountain of two men peeing in a pool, no less--we had to give Prague another chance at showing off one of her most famous sons. Funny thing about that... Kafka was virtually unknown for many years in the Czech Republic because his ideas were banned by the communists in control.... The interest of Western tourists...Read More

Perched high on a hilltop, Prague Castle has been the area's seat of power for hundreds of years. We wanted to see the changing of the guard at noon, so we found seats on the steps of a building opposite the first courtyard where we could clearly see two sentries at their posts. In blue uniforms, they stand in the shadows of the Battling Titans, two giant statues engaged in battle on the gate piers. We were able to watch a small company of guards march through those gates to the sounds of a brass band and go through the formalities of saluting and nodding that all guards do when they change positions. It's my understanding that the changing of the guard...Read More
