This is mostly a dining guide for a few of the many restaurants found in the Durango area. A recent study found that Durango has more restaurants than San Francisco (1 for every 120 residents) and a great many of them are very good.

Ken and Sue'sBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Ken and Sue's is one of my favorite places to bring friends and family when they visit. While they do not have a huge menu, it always has good variety and everyone can find something they will like. For lunch the open-faced meatloaf sandwich is great.

The atmosphere is comfortable (kind of a casual bistro feel), and while the restaurant is not huge (that is a good thing!), it does expand to a nice sized patio area during the summer months.

Ken and Sue's is also one of the only places in Durango to be receive Wine Spectators Award of Excellence, and has reasonable wine prices.

Steamworks is the largest and best known of the local brew pubs. You'll find the typical bar/pub fare with some southwest additions (green chilies, buffalo, etc.). This would be a good choice if you have a large group, although I would make a reservation if you are bringing more than eight or so. They offer several of their own brews, which are all pretty good!

Steamworks is located one block uphill from Main Avenue for anyone from out of town.

While I have only been to Mutu's for lunch so far, both times it was with a large group from work and nobody went away disappointed. The atmosphere is very comfortable and has a very open feel to it. I really like the feel of this place and hope that it is able to make it in Durango. The menu is concise but has a good variety, not just the normal pasta and pizza that a lot of Italian places offer.

Mutu's is located one block uphill from Main for anyone not familiar with Durango.

Tequila's Mexican RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Tequila's"

Most of the local's that I know in Durango consider Tequila's their favorite sit down Mexican restaurant. The chip's and salsa provided as you consider the email can be almost addictive. One of the must try items on the menu is the seafood burrito. They also do a great specialty margarita. Certainly one of the places that you should try while in town.

Easy to find on main.

Tequila's also has locations in Farmington New Mexico and Cortez Colorado, although I have not eaten at the Farmington location yet.

Christina's Bar & GrillBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Christina's Bar & Grill"

Christina's can easily fly under the radar due to it's location, which is a little out of Downtown Durango on Highway 160 (Towards Mesa Verde Park and Cortez). It's located right next to a Best Western, and the exterior appearance can also fool you. Once you step in the door you will be pleasantly surprised, especially by the food. Christina's has both a casual bar side, and a separate dining room. Probably best know for their steaks and soups, but anything on the menu is sure to please.

Shanghai PearlBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

The best thing about this place is the location. The food is mediocre at best, if you like black pepper as the main spice you might like it, otherwise there are other places in Durango that are much better.

Good sized place, but getting a little run down. My advice is to look elsewhere.

Ore HouseBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

The Ore House is a Steakhouse located in downtown Durango, which has been around for just about forever. Five of us (four adults, one child) dined this evening. Since it has been around forever the inside shows it's age, both in the feel of the dining area which is a little cramped feeling and very dark, and in the restroom facilities (very small and hard to access. Completely impossible for someone in a wheelchair).

We skipped appetizers on this evening and went straight to entrees/salad bar. The salad bar is pretty basic, nothing special to note, but adequate if your not trying to make a meal off of it. Entrees were Lobster, scallops, ribeye, salmon, and chicken for the youngster. I had the 10oz ribeye special which was very tasty, the only negative is that I would prefer a thicker steak smaller in diameter. I have found however that most of the restaurants around here go for thinner cuts of meat that fill the plate, they just don't have the flavor of a thicker cut! If you order a baked potato be cautious of ordering it with "everything", this is the southwest and "everything" will include green chiles. Everyone else enjoyed their meal and gave it a thumbs up. We did not order from the wine list, or do dessert so no comment on those areas.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge RailroadBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad"

Train1
Certainly one of Durango's premier tourist activities. If you go (and you should) be prepared to spend most of the day on the ride unless you plan ahead and reserve a seat on the bus back from Silverton, which is what I would suggest. While it costs a little extra ($5.00 last time I went) it will save you a couple of hours, and the last hour or so on the train can be very boring. On the trip outbound I would suggest that you try to get a seat on the right hand side of the train as this has the best views (unless your afraid of heights!). If you can manage to make it during railfest (late August) you can see other narrow gauge trains that come in special. In late November and Most of December they run the Polar Express for kids.
