Comino, sandwiched between the islands of Malta and Gozo, is sparsely populated (save for a hotel or two) and offers a peaceful environment for walkers as there are no vehicles on this island. In the summer, hordes of tourists descend on the Blue Lagoon. Although it is quite beautiful it may not be worth traveling from Valletta for unless you supplement it with other activities such as hiking around Comino, traveling around Gozo, or visiting the northern end of the island of Malta.

The natural beauty of the Blue Lagoon is, as many other popular tourist attractions tend to be, diminished when swarms of tourists are shuttled from Gozo or Malta for a day of swimming in this crystal clear water. Although the number of tourists is large, it is not so much that it does not warrant a visit. Most of those there are simply relaxing; swimming, sunbathing, sleeping, enjoying the scenery, and so, other than the boats warning of their imminent departure, the Blue Lagoon is quite serene. Comino is a quiet, peaceful sanctuary. If you are interested in "getting away from it all," Comino may be the place to do it, especially if you are staying over night, long after the last day trippers have left.

There are multiple water taxi services to Comino from the same area in which the ferry to Gozo departs. Rates were similar at all of the locations I found. Usually, the boat operators have a schedule of times that they travel to the island, and another schedule of times in which they pick up travelers from their designated spot around the Blue Lagoon. All of the boat operators I found had short detours (either on the way there or on the way back) showcasing the caves along the water. This will not take you out of the way, rather they just travel closer to the island to allow you to get a better look.

In short, although the Blue Lagoon is beautiful, so are many other shores and swimming areas in Malta. But if you are planning on being in northern Malta or Gozo anyway, I recommend you take a trip to this rightfully popular location.

If you are going to Malta and you enjoy a little exploring, I highly recommend taking a trip to Gozo, a slightly quieter island than that of Malta, and beautiful in its own right. The ferry to Gozo (Mgarr) from northern Malta (Cirkewwa) runs regularly (24 hours a day in both the mid and summer seasons, which are listed as the May 30 to October 29 for 2006). The trip is both quick (25 minutes) and inexpensive.

When on Gozo, there is a bus system, but they do not seem to run as regularly or as late (to some of the destinations) as they do on Malta. Buses from the port of Gozo to other sites leave only shortly after the arrival of each ferry and is loaded with people. The bus goes to Rabat (also known as Victoria), the main city on Gozo. Go to the tourist office near here (signs are vague, but locals are extremely helpful) for a bus schedule and walking maps of The Citadel.

The Citadel (entrance is free) provides fantastic views of the Gozo countryside and allows visitors to get an idea of the size of this island. Walk around the highest points of the fortification (on top of a hill) and see the Mediterranean in the distance.

The bus going to the Blue Window is pleasant and also stops at Ta' Pinu Basilica. Views of this site can be seen from the bus, so be sure to sit by the window (right side when going to the window) to catch a glimpse if you don't wish to stop.

If you are going to Malta, the Grand Harbour area is a must-see. On one side of the Harbour is Valletta, the capital of Malta, which is fortified on a peninsula. Valletta, a world heritage site, is definitely worth at least a day of exploring. A map of historically significant locations can be found at the tourist office just inside the city gate (located near Valletta's main bus terminal). The area, immediately inside of the city gate and shortly beyond, bustle with tourists and locals alike. Go beyond this area and the main streets and you will encounter quiet beauty. Look down narrow, steep walkways to the Marsamxett Harbor on the north side or Grand Harbour on the south side.

On the other side of the Grand Harbour lie the Three Cities: Birgu (Vittoriosa), Bormla (Cospicua), and Isla (Senglea). A wonderful walking map of the Three Cities can be picked up from the Tourist Office just inside the Valletta City Gate although, even during the peak tourist season, all of these towns were practically void of tourists. I can't even say how many "Are you lost?" glances were directed my way! This is a great way to visit an important region for Malta's history, see the everyday life of Malta, and to enjoy the glorious views of Valletta and the Grand Harbour. Gardjola Garden in Senglea offers absolutely amazing views of the Grand Harbour and Valletta. Definitely worth the short walk from the bus station.
