Malta: Mediterranean Jewel Best of IgoUgo

Overview

Malta is a country of islands, the largest three of which are inhabited. Malta, the largest island, is home to Valletta, the capital. Just north of Malta is Comino, which, although sparsely populated, has a few hotels for those looking for a peaceful locale. Gozo, to the north of Comino, is the second largest island and is easily accessible from Malta by ferry. Malta has a wonderful mix of historical sights, pleasant weather and overall atmosphere. This is a Mediterranean country with much to offer, but may be overlooked by those looking for a few weeks on the beach. For those wishing to spend time with fellow sun-worshipping travelers, Sliema, Mellieha Bay, St. Julians and St. Pauls Bay are com...Read More

The Riviera Resort and Spa is at the northern end of the island of Malta, a mere fifteen to twenty minute walk from the ferry to Gozo (there is a sidewalk that runs along the road, but you can also catch the bus). There is a very small beach with a bar open to hotel guests, but I would recommend taking the bus about five minutes to Mellieha Bay, one of the largest sand beaches on the island of Malta. Although the bus ride is not that long, the trip is up hill (both ways) and in the summer heat, it is best to pay the small fare. Other than another hotel on the same small bay, there is not that much in the immediate area. This is definitely a good pick for those wishing to take a day trip to the island ...Read More

Corinthia Jerma Palace Photo - Malta, Europe
Quote:
I have to start out by saying I am a bit biased against this particular hotel. I did not originally realize that it is more of a resort destination than just a hotel. If you enjoy the resort atmosphere, with kids running around the pool deck, organized activities synced to "Celebration" every few hours, and quintessential resort styling, you may like the Corinthia Jerma Palace. There are a few quiet villages nearby that are not overrun with tourists, but if this is the reason you are going to Malta, I would suggest staying elsewhere. The Corinthia Jerma Palace actually seems quite out of place in this area. There are no real sandy beaches that I could see within the immediate area. There is a...Read More

Blue Lagoon Best of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Comino (Blue Lagoon)"

Blue Lagoon Photo - Blue Lagoon, Malta, Europe
Quote:
Comino, sandwiched between the islands of Malta and Gozo, is sparsely populated (save for a hotel or two) and offers a peaceful environment for walkers as there are no vehicles on this island. In the summer, hordes of tourists descend on the Blue Lagoon. Although it is quite beautiful it may not be worth traveling from Valletta for unless you supplement it with other activities such as hiking around Comino, traveling around Gozo, or visiting the northern end of the island of Malta. The natural beauty of the Blue Lagoon is, as many other popular tourist attractions tend to be, diminished when swarms of tourists are shuttled from Gozo or Malta for a day of swimming in this crystal clear ...Read More

If you are going to Malta and you enjoy a little exploring, I highly recommend taking a trip to Gozo, a slightly quieter island than that of Malta, and beautiful in its own right. The ferry to Gozo (Mgarr) from northern Malta (Cirkewwa) runs regularly (24 hours a day in both the mid and summer seasons, which are listed as the May 30 to October 29 for 2006). The trip is both quick (25 minutes) and inexpensive. When on Gozo, there is a bus system, but they do not seem to run as regularly or as late (to some of the destinations) as they do on Malta. Buses from the port of Gozo to other sites leave only shortly after the arrival of each ferry and is loaded with people. The bus goes to Rabat (a...Read More

Grand Harbour Best of IgoUgo

Attraction

Grand Harbour Photo - Grand Harbour, Valletta, Malta

If you are going to Malta, the Grand Harbour area is a must-see. On one side of the Harbour is Valletta, the capital of Malta, which is fortified on a peninsula. Valletta, a world heritage site, is definitely worth at least a day of exploring. A map of historically significant locations can be found at the tourist office just inside the city gate (located near Valletta's main bus terminal). The area, immediately inside of the city gate and shortly beyond, bustle with tourists and locals alike. Go beyond this area and the main streets and you will encounter quiet beauty. Look down narrow, steep walkways to the Marsamxett Harbor on the north side or Grand Harbour on the south side. On the oth...Read More
