North Strip Area of Las Vegas

A February 2007 trip to Las Vegas by scouv

We spent 3 1/2 days staying at the northern end of the Strip at the HGVC. We enjoyed visiting some "old Vegas" hotels and restaurants...

Beautiful accommodations! Granite counter tops in the bathroom and kitchenette. We stayed in a studio—a large bedroom with kitchenette—and enjoyed having the coffee pot, refrigerator, and microwave for early morning breakfast before leaving room. Deli downstairs was excellent—fruit; fresh, homemade pizzas; sandwiches; drinks; and other foods available. Flat screen TV in room was very nice—small bathroom, but nice. Bedding was to die for—very comfy! Lobby and visitor lounges were gorgeous.

The only negative I would give this location is "the location". I know this area will eventually grow and be the "new strip" area to want to visit - but for now it is mainly new construction and a few older casinos within walking distance -- Saraha, Riviera and Circus Circus (CC is a brisk 15 min walk - TI is a brisk 45 min walk)-- so we had to use more taxis than we wanted - or one could rent a car if desired.....monorail not convenient -- public buses and the deuce bus do run right in front of the hotel but we did not choose to use these forms of transportation. We own here and at the Flamingo HGVC -- we MUCH prefer the Flamingo location and will always book there until this area "grows up".

Steak House at Circus CircusBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "The Steakhouse at Circus Circus"

The Steakhouse is beautiful—hard to believe it is inside the dingy Circus Circus casino! The atmosphere is very romantic—dark woods, low light, nice tables and booths. Wonderful service. Food was delicious. I had the petite (8 oz.) steak (cost $35) and husband had the NY Strip (cost $40 + $7 glass of wine). We both had the house salad, which was huge, and a delicious sweet-vinaigrette house dressing. I had wonderful garlic mashed potatoes—again a very large serving—and husband had a baked potato with the trimmings. Perfectly cooked carrots were the vegetable of the day. The bread basket had a variety of breads, but neither of us ate but a 1/2 piece so we would have room for our steak. I could not finish my potatoes even though they were delicious. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. I have heard the bean soup (an alternative to the salad) is very good but we did not try it. The desserts were absolutely gorgeous but neither of us had room and we just refuse to be stuffed after an elegant meal. Very good value.

Attraction | "Barbra & Frank—The Concert That Never Was"

We bought 1/2 price tickets that morning at the 1/2 price booth location next door to the Riviera. These impersonators look very, very much like the "real deal" and acted and sang just like them! The showroom is small (only about 15 rows deep) so all seats are good—maybe those in the very side seats could not see the center stage well— and the show itself was very good, very entertaining and high quality. I bought the CD and DVD after the show for $10 each—a real bargain. Drinks are for sale during the performance. No reason to pay full price as all the 1/2 price outlets usually have tickets for sale daily. You cannot exchange the ticket for a reserved seat—it is "first come, first seated" and the doors open about 30 minutes in advance of the show...check at the box office to be sure as this will probably vary.

Attraction | "Visiting Sahara—Eating at Café"

Very interesting to visit this "original casino"—had an old, elegant feel to the casino. Photos of The Beatles and many others who have stayed there—photo of Johnny Carson with a shovel the day of ground breaking. Gorgeous chandeliers all over the ceiling. We ate in the hotel café and the food was very good—husband had breakfast and I had a hamburger—good value.

I was a bit disappointed in this casino—dark and not as classy as I thought it might be. Was interested in seeing the "famous" bronze statues of Crazy Girls outside the main door—took photos just for fun as not sure how long this casino will survive with all the new construction going on at that end of the strip.

Lots of families roaming around due to the family arcade games on the second floor. Low ceilings and dark—does not appear to be clean—seemed run down and low class. We went there to eat at their EXCELLENT steakhouse—but that is all that impressed us favorably! I reviewed the Steakhouse elsewhere...it is highly recommended.

Attraction | "Crazy Horse Show at MGM (was LeFemme)"

We were able to purchase 1/2 price tickets that morning at the 1/2 price outlet by the Fashion Showcase Mall near Wynn and TI. The show was very tasteful and rather sensual—more so than other topless shows we have seen (Jubilee, Zumanity, and Fantasy). We enjoyed this one—the girls are very talented dancers and the routines are different and classy. The theater is rather small—but wide—I think it might be hard to see the full effect and full stage area if seated way on the sides. We were in the back but just to the right of mid center and could see perfectly— see no reason to pay full price for this show as it is usually available at the 1/2 price ticket outlets. Red velvet interior, table or booth seating, drinks are for sale. Good for couples looking for a sexy show that is classy and not crude.
