The Hotel Helix is a great bargain for the price, particular since it's a hotel far from the typical beige carpeting/generic art on the walls type of hotel you might usually stay in. It's colorful and mod, a throwback to 1960s pop art. The suite I stayed in with my family was spacious. The hotel feels pretty posh and the furniture is modern and highly stylized. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. The minifridge was well stocked with all sorts of goodies. The bar/lounge on the main floor makes a good martini and a decent hamburger and seems to be a pretty hot nightspot for some of the locals. On July 4th, my family and I went to the National Mall, where we sat to watch the fireworks. We got there after most of the crowds had arrived, but we were still able to secure a pretty good seat, with plenty of space to lounge on the grass and watch the fireworks shot off from behind the Washington Monument. The fireworks display is spectacular, definitely worth braving the crowds. We went with just ourselves and a blanket to sit on, but plenty of others made a picnic of it, bringing food and camping out on the lawn several hours in advance.
