Restaurants, hikes, and hotel & condo stays.

We stayed at Hilton Resort in Lihue on the Island of Kauai. The grounds were nice enough. The rooms fine. The amenities such as the pool just fine. Now to the staff. They were unfriendly, not much of the Aloha spirit here. When we checked in there was no welcome from the reception desk. There was not even eye contact made. I would never recommend staying here. Maybe I am not a Resort type person.

Baracuda

Restaurant

We were excited to eat at Baracuda in Hanlei in Kauai. When we arrived the hostess was snooty. Have you ever had the feeling at a restaurant that they somehow think it is YOUR privilege to be eating at their establishment. That is the reception we got. Oh Boy! We were seated at a bad table because we did not make reservations. Not very laid back for Kauai.

Then came our waiter. Horrible! It took us quite awhile just to get a drink order in. I ordered a top shelf Margarita. When it came there was nothing top shelf about this margarita. It was extremely sour. We ordered our tapas (appetizers) which were overpriced. They were actually tasty. We were never asked if we wanted another drink although. The water glasses were filthy. The only source of joy was the nice gentlemen who brought us delicious bread and gave us a few food suggestions. I would never recommend eating there. No ambience, just okay food and snooty, lazy wait staff.

Polynesia Café

Restaurant

Delicious, delicious and inexpensive. We ate here on our first night in Kauai. Wonderful Hawaiian Plate. Their motto is gourmet on paper plates. The Polynesia Café is in Hanlei although there is one in Kappa. This particular café is outdoor seating which means bring BYOB. NO corkage charge. Don't you just love Hawaii? They also make delicious carrot cake and other delectable desserts. I highly recommend this place it is wonderful.

Well this place is okay. We ate there for lunch and sat at the bar. The Pina Colada was top notch. The fish and chips was delicious. I had the Ahi Sandwich. which was good but served a little cold. The only real thing I had a problem with was the cleanliness factor. Because we were sitting at the bar we saw one of the workers come up grab ice out of the ice container with her hands and go back to work. Other than that and a long blonde hair in my sandwich it was okay. I do recommend eating at the Fish Market portion around the side of the restaurant. It is all to go and they have wonderful fish to cook back at the condo. They include ginger and wasabi. They also have wonderful sushi rolls.

We liked Neides. The owner was gracious. I think she could replace her unfriendly wait staff. The Brazilian food is yummy, especially the vegetarian. I had fish tacos which were a little bland. Order the Brazilian food and you will be happy.

Waimea Canyon

Activity

God's wonderful creation. We hiked to the falls it was so awe inspiring. Wear good tennis shoes or hiking shoes. Even though it was not a clear day we could see so much of the canyon at all the vantage points. On our hike we came out on top of the canyon. It was a bit frightening because you are standing on the top of the canyon and there are no rails! Woo hoo. Not so great for someone (ME) who is scared of heights. I so recommend this grand hike to see the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. We stopped at the State Park store and that was fun lots of nice out of the ordinary souveniers.

Farmer's Markets

Activity

A nice way to support the local farmers, get fresh fruit and veggies. Just look for the signs all over Kauai the farmer's markets are on different days in different places. We bought the juiciest, tastiest pineapple I have ever had. Delicious papaya's, star fruit, mini bananas right from the tree. The only way to eat fruit while you are on the islands.

Kee Beach

Activity

Wonderful snorkeling beach with a nice protected reef which means lots of vibrant fish. My husband and I felt like were swimming in the word's biggest aquarium. Amazing! Even when the surf is up you can swim. Actually there was only one day we couldn't snorkel there. Great to bring kids too, as the water is calm. There are bathrooms. In addition there are some cool, dark, deep caves on the road in to Kei beach.
