A February 2001 trip to Honolulu by Mary525

Overview

Quote:
Waikiki Beach can be very nice when it is not too crowded. Early mornings are the best times before the crowds arrive and before it get too hot. Besides the beach, Honolulu has many attractions to keep you busy, Arizona Memorial, Bishop Museum, the Honolulu Zoo, and shopping, or you can easily get out of the city on the many bus tours and see some of the countryside around the island. Quick Tips: Bus tours are available and will pick you up at most of the hotels. Full day Circle Island tours (8 Hours) covers 120 miles. One-day tours to the other islands are also offered. There is also a trolley that goes to many of the main tourist attractions in Honolulu and Waikiki – a one day ...Read More

Hotel

I stayed in a room in an older section of the hotel (it was cheaper than the newer tower). Rooms were very small and in need of renovations, carpets, bedspreads, etc. looked very worn. The bathroom was large, but again very dated looking. There was no counter space, but a small medicine cabinet. There is an interesting sign in the bathroom "please shower inside the bathtub". Not quite sure why they would ever need to put a sign up like that! Did not see the tower rooms, but they are apparently more modern. In room coffee maker (free coffee), mini fridge and safe. All rooms are non smoking, but smoking is permitted on the Lanai. The Lanai is very large with a patio table and two chairs...Read More

This is a basic older hotel, with smaller rooms, but we found it kept up very well for being older. The rooms were very clean and the bedspreads, carpets and drapes all seemed like they have been recently replaced (Feb 01). The bathrooms were very small, and had a shower only. The tile and the sink in the bathroom were old and very worn looking, but it appeared clean. The bathroom needed better lightling. In room amenities included coffee maker (coffee was $2.50USD per package, better off to bring your own or pick some up at a grocery store), mini- fridge, and in room safe. There was also a lanai with a small table and two chairs. There is a small pool area and sun deck on third...Read More

This is one of the better Outrigger hotels. The rooms are a good size with two twin beds and a sitting area with table, chair and a rattan lounge. It is an older hotel but it was kept up quite well. The bathroom was quite small, and had a shower only. It was a newer shower, but the tile in the bathroom was very old and worn looking. The room did have a mini fridge and a coffee maker. Coffee was $2.50 USD per package. There was also a small lanai with a table and two chairs. There is a small pool and sun deck on second floor. The pool was not heated and was usually very cold. The patio receives the sun after about 11AM. There are three restaurants on the main floor of the ho...Read More

This hotel is an excellent value in the heart of Waikiki. The rooms are an average size with two double beds and a sitting area with table, chair and mini fridge. In our room the furniture was quite old and worn but very clean and comfortable. The rooms could do with an update. The bathroom was large iwth a bath/shower combo which is nice since many hotels in Waikiki have a shower only. The rooms have a refrigerator, coffee/tea maker, clock radio, hair dryer, in-room safe, voice mail, television sets with internet access, on-demand movies, video games and HBO. There was a large lanai with a table and two chairs, ours overlooked the pool, and it you stretched you could see the...Read More

The Polynesian Cultural Centre is located about 35 miles north of Honolulu. The Centre is a group of 7 villages combined into the Cultural Centre. Countries represented include Tonga, Tahiti, Marquesas, Hawaii New Zealand and Samoa. Each country showcases local singing, dancing, crafts, and food. Be sure to check out Samoa for the tree climber. Each afternoon there is the Pagent of the Canoes, with traditional stories and music set on water. Each county is represented with the participants in the tranditional costumes of their country. Most of the admission packages come with an evening meal. We choose Gateway Package with included a buffet dinner. The buffet featured various meat entree...Read More
