An October 2006 trip

Quote: This is a review about the quaint tourist town of Monterey, California, and all of the fun things I do while I'm here.
Some of the highlights of Monterey are as follows:
Monterey is located 2 hours south of San Francisco on the beautiful rugged coastline of California. It is minutes from Carmel, CA, and its exclusive golf courses including Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and Spanish Bay. Wine tasting, sealion spotting, enjoyable dining, shopping, and visiting the most famous aquarium in the country are some of the things I have done while here. This is a small tight knit community that is very friendly when it comes to having visitors from all over the country, and all over the world.
There is a community walking path that snakes along the coastline, several public beaches, and many authentic restaurants. I always love wandering the downtown street on Thursday afternoon when all of the farmers from the communities further inland sell their produce along the streets. Restaurants set up small booths selling their delicious ethnic foods including Indian, Korean, Thai, and many more. Locals and visitors alike can buy locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as locally produced candles, honey, and woven goods. Guitar music and singing flood the streets and the ambiance is truly one of a kind.
The most important advice I have for those wishing to visit Monterey is this: although you are coming to California, make sure you bring a good amount of clothing. Many tourists expect 70-80 degree weather, especially in the summer. In fact, summer is the coldest time of the year in Monterey. It is when the fog rolls in and if you are walking around in shorts you will get very chilly.
Other recommendations include: try staying at one of the many bed-and-breakfasts here, instead of choosing a hotel or motel. The experience will be much more unforgettable.
To save money: there is a free trolley bus that runs for about half the year that goes between the main downtown area and the Cannery Row area (all of the shops, as well as the aquarium). Check this out. Monterey has its own airport but there is also the San Jose airport 1.5 hrs away.
