Quote: Taking advantage of a last minute web fare, my boyfriend and I fled a rainy weekend on the East Coast for a sun-drenched weekend in the beautiful area around Tempe, AZ. Better yet, we did it on a budget and had a wonderful time.

1- Tubing on the Salt River (no kids under 8). For you get a tube and access to a bus that stops at 5 points along the river. Take in the sun and views of the surrounding mountains as you float downriver for 2-5 hours. If you''re like the locals, you''ll rent an extra tube so a cooler can float along with you. 2- Driving the Apache Trail. The drive alone is a day well spent, but stopping at any of the lakes makes for a nice swim and a great place to enjoy a packed lunch. Good place for car camping. Like most KOAs, this is not rugged camping. It''''s pull-thru sites with saguaro cacti and prickly pear scattered around, but a beautiful view of the Superstition Mtns. Most people were in RVs, but this is the only place we found in the Phoenix area where we could use a tent and have showers. There are also 3-4 Kamping Kabins with air conditioning – if you''''re more concerned with keeping your budget down than sleeping in a tent, go for the cabins. It''''s still only $30/night and the a/c will be worth the extra $10 after a day of sightseeing in the desert heat. The bathrooms were clean and it has a nice pool/hot tub.
