It was accidental the first time, but so good we've repeated this (San Francisco in October) with variations several times since. The first time we were staying at a budget B&B when our hosts asked if we were there for Fleet Week or the Columbus Day Parade. We did not know about either so it was serendipitous - the way of many of our trips. The weather is perfect in October - its their equivalent of summer. Really! I have been here in the summer months and the fog kept me cold so that I had to wear a jacket - but in October I use the jacket as a pillow while listening to the Not Strictly Bluegrass (NSB) festival in Golden Gate Park. The only problem with coming this particular weekend is - deci...Read More

A great location (near the Marina) on a bus line, walking distance to the Presidio, great restaurants abound. The rooms - clean, quiet and large with comfortable beds and excellent water pressure. An old- fashioned motor inn with large corner windows in our room - back from the street. I could even see the Golden Gate from my corner window - off to the side but I could see it. Free parking is icing on the cake for those who have a car. We paid about $100 a night for three nights in October 2006.

It's lovely to look at from the outside and a great experience inside. Be sure to go to the top of the tower for gorgeous 360º views of the city. Check ahead to see if you can buy tickets to one of the evening events - views of the city at night are fantastic! We were there when their special exhibit was from Gee's Bend Alabama - folk quilts with unusual designs and materials. The permanent collections are definitely worth your time. We enjoyed coming and going during the day rather than trying to see it all at once. Keep your admission sticker and go enjoy the botanical gardens, the conservatory or just people-watching in the park and come back to the de Young. Just outside the museum...Read More
