First Timer in Athens

Overview

Quote:
This is a review of my first trip to Athens, in December 2006. The trip was for 5 nights staying in Syntagma (Constitution) Square.

Quick Tips:

Get the credit-card size map of the subway network, which has a decent map of Central Athens on the other side. You can get this from the Metro ticket booth upon arrival at the airport.

Remember that most restaurants have a cover charge of about 2 euro.

Best Way To Get Around:

Travel to/from Athens airport to downtown Syntagma Square is very straight forward. From the airport, take the Metro line 2 to Syntagma Square station. The duration is about 40 minutes. The cost is 6 euros for 1 person, or 10 euros for 2 people.

First thing first, I stayed at this hotel using points, so price wasn't a factor. The hotel is one of the landmark hotels in Athens, and is marketed under Starwood's Luxury Collection brand. It was built in 1842 and restored in 2003. It is located in downtown Athens, on Syntagma Square. The hotel is right around the corner if you take the correct exit - very convenient. It is also very close to the shopping area (such as the Louis Vuitton store). The room is furnished in "old world" style but with modern amenities. In the junior suite, the ba...Read More

First off, admission fees to many tourist attractions/historical sites in Athens are cheap, usually about 4-5 euro per person.I'd imagine that most tourists to Athens will make the trip to the Acropolis and the Parthenon, since they are the main symbols of Athens. If I recall correctly, the entrance fee to Acropolis/Parthenon is 12 euro, which also gains you admission to the Acropolis museum, Ancient Agora, Theatre of Dionysos Kerameikos and Temple of Olympian Zeus. You can visit the other sites on different days (the ticket is not limited to same day usage). It is fantastic value and is easily one of the best bargains to be had in Athens.Upon climbing Acropolis Hill, the first site yo...Read More
