I really wasn't into the whole KOA Campground thing until I saw what a great place it is for kids--and realized how much fun a pop top oceanfront can be. There's more to Hatteras than just the lighthouse, and the wildlife preserves are beautiful.

Quick Tips:

Climbing the lighthouse sounds like a fantastic, romantic idea but it's huge--quite an undertaking, and consider the heat before you go there. Small children, the elderly and people with heart conditions are not allowed to even try.

Best Way To Get Around:

A car is the only way to go - or a surfboard.

This was much more fun than I expected. Lots of cool Canadians there, which added some diversity. We had a fantastic oceanfront spot and groovy vintage pop-top to stay in. A severe storm brought on strange lucid dreams and shook the camper. It was an adventure.

The campground had fun stuff for my son--banana bikes (bad choice, too hot to fool with really), a pool and game room (but downside was the game room wasn't air-conditioned), semi-entertaining though slightly dogmatic theater (didn't know it was a Xn themed campground but that's ok--the kids liked it). The best was a playground and water-balloon fight site. The part of the beach it was on was great.

The food was delicious at this uniquely named ocean front restaurant just outside of Hatteras. Very kid friendly, (kids meals are served on frisbees they can take home). Features fabulous seafood and hush-puppies you'll die over.

One of the problems of staying at KOA was the absence of good coffee. I found it nearby at this place, which includes a cool gallery, gift shop, and on-site very kid friendly dog. Great pastries, smoothies and other stuff too that kids will like/be entertained by as you get your coffee fix. You can sit outside on benches while you sip and enjoy the beach-front atmosphere. Peruse the area for more great little coffee shops and art galleries. There's even an Internet cafe.

My son flipped over this, we've been buying lighthouse souveniers ever since. I didn't brave the stairs, seems like something to undertake in cool weather, maybe once in a lifetime. But it's a spectacular sight to see. A cool (happily air conditioned) musuem is on the site with neat artifacts, including info about pirates and sunken treasure. Wildlife abounds too.
