Greetings From Asbury Park

Overview

Sent to Asbury Park for a music feature covering E-Street Band member Soozie Tyrell, the Seeger Sessions, and local up-and-coming acts, I had interesting experiences not only doing my job but visiting this cool seaside town. I can't wait to go back!

Quick Tips:

Check out the boardwalk, the new antique market, and most of all the fantastic nightlife. This place rocks not only in the summer but all year round!

Best Way To Get Around:

Parking is pretty easy to find. You'll want to stroll around, most attractions are in concentrated areas.

Johnny Cash and his family once lived in a suite here, (there's stained glass on the door, I snuck up to see it on my way out), movie stars and producers stayed here, rock stars stayed here...the place is positively steeped in pop culture history. Oceanfront and right on the glorious boardwalk—hard to beat. The breakfast is beyond decent, rooms are comfortable and large. Downside is it leaks (apparently a perpetual problem, the Man in Black had to complain about it). THE place to stay when visiting, leaks or no.

Adriatic

Restaurant

On the outside, it doesn't look like the most spectacular restaurant in Asbury Park, but it is. Owner and chef Nick Tovic has been there since it opened in the 60s. Everything you've heard about Asbury Park he's seen. From riots to rock revolution and back and forth again a few times. The food is amazing. When I visited, I sat in Diane Keaton's favorite seat with a view of Johnny Cash's former hotel suite window right across the street. (He and his family, along with most of the other movie and music people who came to Asbury Park, got most of their food from there, usually dining in.) Springsteen still orders steaks from there when he's in town.

Stone Pony

A bastion of rockdom. The door guy (Pocket) "remembers Bon Jovi since before Bon Jovi could drink". It's small and intimate but somehow fulfills all of your rock and roll fantasies. Coolest of all, the stage is level with the floor, so you can see the fabulous music up close. An outside deck, one of the best sound guys in the country, some of the best bartenders and staff I've ever met—Ceasar, chef and bastion of the Pony universe—a must see. And you never know, every now and then Springsteen drops in.

It's gotten a face-lift, and once again there are bright signs for arcades, funnel cakes and other delights, a new Howard Johnson's right in the thick of it...something for everyone. Beach access, complete with volleyball and a gorgeous, crystaline blue ocean and almost white sand beach, is extremely reasonably priced. Local bastions of food and fun like the Wonder Bar are a stone's throw away.

Like the Stone Pony, the Wonder Bar has a deep-rooted history in the Asbury Park music scene, though it's more a place for local acts (which are fantastic), while the Pony has national acts weekly (and lots of great local acts too—this town breathes music like air). Brightly lit, very pop culture, fun place to go. Good burgers, but for really great food, go to the Adriatic.

Albert Hall

Attraction

Quote:
Not far from Asbury Park are the Pine Barrens, an area settled by deserters from the Revolutionary War who maintained their old-time music traditions. The Albert Hall weekly Saturday night show and pickin' shed attracts visitors from all over the world and from regional locales like the Hamptons and Long Island. I went there to write about it and somehow ended up center stage playing along with the old-timers. Did I mention it's also the home of the infamous Jersey Devil?
