Christmas in Todos Santos

A December 2006 trip to Todos Santos by Catherine Oyster

A seven-day stay in Todos Santos.

We found this place by spotting a painted wooden sign that read Akachan Sushi and Fish Market near the corner of Morelos and Cuahtemoc. I was hesitant to eat sushi in Todos Santos, but wanted to check out the fish market to see what catch they had in stock. We entered this tiny, spotless store with a single refrigerated display case holding a couple of varieties of locally caught fish. All of the fish had been caught the same day or the afternoon before. The first day we visited there was tuna and shrimp. We bought a small amount of each and grilled up at the house we were renting to test it out. The tuna had no smell (uncooked) and was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The shrimp was fantastic.

The next day we returned for some yellowtail and shrimp, again with delicious results. On our last trip to the fish market, we purchased scallops and additional yellowtail. What a great find! It was only on our last visit that we checked out the tiny sushi bar next door.

Unfortunately we did not end up eating at Akachan as we had planned our last dinner for Las Fuentes (big mistake in the end) but did talk to the sushi chef about his training (in Cabo) and looked at the bar. It was clean and had a traditional nigiri sushi selection. After our experience with the spanking brand new fresh fish we devoured that, we had a feeling we missed out on a great eating experience and promised the next time we returned we'd be eating sushi in Todos Santos.

Trying the fish market is a must if you can't make it out to the beach to buy seafood from the local fishermen. And I wouldn't hesitate to try the sushi either.

George's TacosBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Baja style tacos at their best. Clean sidewalk cart and fresh offerings for toppings. You can choose fish tacos or shrimp tacos, both are fried just right, not too greasy or doughy. Select your own combination of vinegar or cream slaw, pickled onions, green and red salsas, hot sauce, and other fresh taco toppers. There was a huge jug of guava juice on the counter just perfect for the hot day and complimented the tacos perfectly.

Great food and no worries on the cleanliness of the food, they use filtered water for preparing the raw ingredients. Our group of 6 did not get a touch of Montezuma on our 7 day stay in Todos Santos, and thought this might be the place to do us in.

Eat up earlier in the day, because when Taco's George's runs out of food, they close the shop.

A selection of imported cheeses, wines, and meats contribute to a fine menu at this expensive Italian restaurant. I cannot comment on the pastas or entrees, as we did not indulge in either.

The host took about 10 minutes to greet us, as there was a large lunch crowd, most likely due to the busy season we were contributing to. Café Santa Fe is decorated with a mix of Baja and Italian furniture; the center courtyard is covered with a palapa roof while the open kitchen has classic Italian black and white tiling.

For our lunch meal, we ordered salads and pizzas to cut down on the expense. The salads range from $15 to $20 and a pizza for four runs from $18 to $25. If we had gone with the pasta or entrees, we were looking at a $22 minimum per person for the most basic of pastas.

The Greek salad consisted of sliced tomatoes covered in Greek olives and crumbled cheese, and was anointed in olive oil and vinegar. Very fresh and the cheese was of a perfect consistency and flavor to compliment the olives.

The antipasti plate was comprised of prosciutto, melon, salami, a creamy goat cheese, provolone, and another soft cheese. There were a few other meats on the plate, but each one was good and matched each cheese.

Last we had our pizza—and this truly was a fine gourmet pizza! California Pizza Kitchen tastes like Domino's in comparison to the pizza here—and to have a pizza this good in Baja was also a surprise.
