For our first night in Scotland, we pre-booked the Dalmeny Park Country House Hotel using Laterooms.com. We had some difficulty finding the hotel, as the sign is not very visible when approaching from the south, but were pleasantly surprised once we arrived.

The hotel is a former mansion and quite impressive architecturally. Rooms are scattered down long, maze-like corridors, each with unique decorating themes. Our party had two rooms booked, and each was appointed with antique furnishings, electric kettles, and basic toiletries. The staff left open several of the "suite" rooms so guests could view them as well...and they were comparable to some of the castle hotels I have stayed at in the past.

The Dalmeny Park has a restaurant serving a full Scottish breakfast in the morning, which was excellent! We left so full that we skipped lunch that day. Unfortunately, there was a private party the evening of our arrival and we were unable to enjoy the pub.

Additional bonuses of this hotel are the private car park and friendly staff. Despite an urban setting, the hotel has private park grounds, which are a delight to walk. The only drawback was the lack of elevator...our rooms were up quite a few steps. The staff did offer porter services, however, so don't let this be a deterrent.
