Weekend in Monterey

Overview

Quote:
Check out the Aquarium, eat at Phil's in Moss Landing, do 17 mile drive. Just walk around and see the otters playing in the surf.

Quick Tips:

Don't eat at Blue Moon, know that 17 mile drive charges

Best Way To Get Around:

Drive or fly and rent a car. If you're into biking, bring or rent a bike because you can pedal all around Monterey and Pacific Grove, and even 17 mile drive.

This place is bigger than the type of place we usually like to stay. That said, it was beautiful, great service, gorgeous rooms, great property overall. We bought a package that included breakfast at the Duck Club. Yummy - crab cakes while watching otters frolic. Good stuff. Would probably stay at a smaller, more intimate place in Pacific Grove if we returned.

We actually didn't eat here. It was recommended to us, so we made reservations (we wanted to eat within walking distance from our hotel). Don't do it! It was the only place on Cannery Row with a hawker outside begging people to go in. We went in and I was somewhat freaked out by the funky turquoise booths and fact that there were 2 other tables full - a solo diner and huge family. There were no bottled wines and the by the glass list sucked (I'm not a huge wine snob. But Fetzer for $8 a glass?!). And, the light above our table was flickering on and off psychotically and buzzing. We left and went to El Torrito because it was the only place in walking distance that wasn't full.

I think that reservations would be best for dinner. We ate breakfast there both days (part of a package the hotel offered). So fabulous! Wish we would have gone for dinner too. Great service, awesome decor and views.

Do yourself a favor - go eat at Phil's. Fried artichokes - fabulous! Then, share a two way fry plate (so much food!). We got oysters (amazing) and Cod (great). The Sand dabs were lovely, but sharing the fry plate is enough to satisfy your taste buds and tummy and leave your arteries somewhat intact.

We love marine life and have been wanting to go forever. It was a lot of fun, but super crowded and there were a TON of kids. Our fault for not thinking that would be the case. But, there were a few really poorly behaved kids that made the experience less enjoyable. That said, the deep sea feeding (outer bay exhibit) was awesome, the otters were super cute, and the kelp forest feeding was cool too. We thought it would take a lot more time than it did. Plan for about 3 hours.

They charge $9 to do the drive?! Maybe I wouldn't have cared so much had I had any idea that we'd fork over $10 to drive behind the family from hell who insists on going 5 MPH and staring at every white male to see if it is Clint Eastwood, or once we pass him, stuck behind the Movie Tours bus? OK, gripe aside, it is an amazing stretch of coast. And, we would have done it regardless of the charge. It was sunny and completely beautiful.

There are a few tasting rooms in Monterey and the Carmel Valley but only a few actual wineries in the area. Heller Valley Estates is one of the wineries actually located in the valley and is fabulous. We bought 2 bottles and would have bought cases if possible. Carmel Valley is a short drive from Monterey and, while not Napa, mellow, fun, and worth checking out.
