Sweet and Sunny San Diego

A December 2006 trip to San Diego by travelwriter85

When thinking of San Diego I picture SUN, SAND, AND SEA! San Diego lies in the middle of paradise with 74 degree weather everyday and where flip flops can be worn all year round, now um, that's a vacation!

I loved San Diego! From the perfect weather (sunny everyday and no clouds) to the things to do, it's no wonder San Diego is a favorite with so many people. For the must see experience, you have to visit the San Diego Zoo (Pandas are the highlight but also visit the Koala's!), Old Town--which has a Mexican feel with clothes, paintings, and cuisine, Gaslamp Quarter (their historic downtown district), Coronado Island--make a stop to see the beautiful Hotel Del Coronado, which was modeled after the Wizard of OZ's Emerald City. Coronado Island is called the Enchanted Island, and you'll soon see why! I got to see the two naval bases there where I got to see the giant Battleships and Submarine vessels. They also have the coolest outdoor mall I've ever been to!

Quick Tips:

Zoo costs per person ; Old Town is free except parking, Gaslamp is free except meter parking so bring quarters. Coronado Island has beach parking and you better go out and explore by foot what Coronado has to offer... I promise it' s lovely!

Best Way To Get Around:

I went to visit a friend, who was in the Navy, so I had a great tour guide who really showed me around. I went on the bases and went just everywhere. I did notice though that they had excellent public transportation in a form of red trolley... t looked like fun! As in any major city, taxis were available as well. But if you can, get a Military tour guide, they give the best tours because they know the city personally!

Restaurant

Wow! This restaurant impressed me. We started off with an Antipasta and the best Pinot Noir wine called Chateau St. Jean (I recommend it!)I had Chicken Marsala and the portions were huge! We also ordered Cafe Mochiatta's (which are not on the menu---it's one shot espresso, one shot of milk that's the correct way it's supposed to be prepared), and needless to say, they made it right! They passed that test with flying colors. Our waiters were true Italians and very hospitable and may I add that you also want to try something called "Lemon-cello." It's a drink that you do not sip but take like a shot without trying to taste anything and it is supposed to help you digest properly. I recommend that as well. It was a lovely dinner! The bill was about $100 but with great food, conversation and service, it's worth every penny!

Restaurant

Jimmy's was a place that only locals would know about. I liked it very much and ate there on New Year's Day. Good food and service!

The Outdoor MallBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

The seats were plush and comfortable. Big screens and lots of room. The movie was excellent too! The downside: since when does it cost $10 to get into a movie theatre? Do they not want us to buy popcorn and chocolate treats? This isn't Hollywood or Beverely Hills 90210 people!
