Contiki European Adventure

An August 2007 trip to Europe by coastingeurope

My 14-day adventure across Europe with Contiki.

Our tour began in London, continuing on through Paris, Lucerne (Switzerland), Hopfgarten (Austria), Venice, Florence, and Rome. I'd been to most of these places before, so I wasn't sure what to expect from Contiki. I was surprised how many activities our tour manager was able to line up for us. By the end of the trip we'd hiked in the alps, watched a performance at the Moulin Rouge, taken a serene gondola ride in Venice, and white-water rafter through a ravine in the Alps. Contiki won me over. The accommodations for the trip were mostly budget, but you are so rarely in the hotel that it doesn't even matter and the rooms were generally nice, comfortable, and clean. I'd highly recommend booking a tour with Contiki if you're looking to explore Europe.

Quick Tips:

Paris: For great bars and restaurants off the beaten path take the Metro to the Oberkampf area.

Lucerne: Do the optional hike up Mt. Pilatus
Hopfgarten: Take advantage of the adventure sports. This was the highlight of my trip.

Venice: A gondola ride is a must

Florence: Avoid the touristy area near the Duomo and dine at some of the restaurants across the Arno or my personal favorite, La Giostra (on Borgo Pinti, 5 minutes from Duomo). Also Perche No Gelato is amazing.

Restaurant

My friends and I stumbled upon the restaurant Au Trou Normand, an intimate restaurant with a local bohemian vibe. In fact, halfway through the dinner some of locals jammed out beats using their silverware, plates, and anything they could pick up. When we entered the host immediately offered us each a glass of champagne as we waited for our table. Seating is arranged in a combination of communal tables, as well as tables for 2 and 4. The menu is divine, and the most expensive item is only €11.50. Ask about the nightly specials and don't leave without sampling the wine list.

To get there take the Metro to the Oberkampf stop. Or visit their website www.napacaro.com

Restaurant | "La Giostra"

I studied abroad in Florence for 4 months and this is hands down my favorite restaurant. The staff are amazing. Everyone receives a complimentary glass of prosecco and a huge appetizer sampler for free. The food is Italian-Austrian fusion (the owners are part Hapsbourg part Medici.) My favorites are the Pear and Pecorino Ravioli, Spinach Ravioli, and Gnocci.

This is the real, authentic Italian cuisine. Don't waste your time at touristy places like Aqua Al Due.
