Quote: I first came here to buy cheese from the Chacon family who traveled up by horse from the valley of San Gerardo to sell their farm products on the Pan American highway. Learning that their village had a trout stream nearby, the Rio Savegre later became my favorite fishing water.

A cool place in every sense, San Gerardo de Dota.

High above the clouds and still rising … I was driving across the Sierra de La Muerte, feeling as if there was more meaning to this ominous name than just one for a beautiful mountain range, so dramatic, cold and sensitive. There were tall tropical oak trees, laden with red flowering bromeliads and trailing tillancias. Cold clouds whistling past their wet branches, reflecting the morning light with laser like fantasy. At an elevation of nearly 8000 feet, we turned and took the winding dirt road off the blacktop highway to descend through magnificent forests, finally reaching the small village of San Gerardo and the clear mountain river of Rio Savegre. Here in this alpine setting we now have very goo...Read More

Built as individual double alpine design cabins with many of the older cabins having open fireplaces and others, more modern with electrical heating units. They all have large rooms with twin or double beds with thick covers and extra blankets. Hotwater showers have got to be tried beforehand to see if and how they work. The gardens around the compound are created to attract birds and when in flower - which is nearly all the time - there are many hummingbird species visiting the various nectar laden blossoms or taking the hummingbird feeders at the main lodge. There is a good gift shop and large dining room where buffet meals are provided. A well stocked bar and information desk is open to all visitor...Read More

Buffet style usual though one can order from a menu. The choice is naturally rainbow trout, baked or broiled with a good choice of vegetables. The apple and peach juices are fresh from the Chacon farm.

There ae a choice of fresh fruit, but the speciality dessert is the Chilean papaya preserve served with fresh sour cream.

This is a small river with fast flowing, clear water. The trout tend to remain in the deep pools, at the head of the current or in protected slower moving water. There are times when it is best to fish the faster water with bead head nymphs. Approaching the pools carefully, the angler is successful with few casts and might be able to get as many as three fish from every pool. They are very wild fish and scare easily if they see any movement. Best to use dark clothes and avoid any bright colored hats. The river is not difficult to walk, having good trails alongside the river and the big pools are not crowded with trees or obstructions. However, one does have to watch the backcast and mastering the roll...Read More
