Dubrovnik, "the Pearl of the Adriatic" is an unique city. It just makes you feel like the time stands still - but its history is very long and winded - established by Roman exiles, it became a seat of the Ragusan Republic, contending with Venice in the struggle over Adriatic (and struggling with the Turkish invasion most of the time). Then it was taken over by the Austro-Hungarian Empire at its peak - adding a Vienna touch to it. Finally most recently it has seen most fighting of all the Croatia (it was regularly bombed with gunfire and damaged heavily) - but thankfully, was rebuild quickly - but you can still see some burnt out building - or notice the bullet holes.
