After spending a beautiful morning touring Les Calanques in the azure Mediterranean, we could think of nothing better than enjoying the Marseillaise favourite, Bouillabaisse, for lunch.
We had heard some positive mutterings about Chez Gilbert, and entered armed with our sound and adequate French apparent. We were seated at a good table, and confidently ordered Bouillabaisse for all.
The waiter seemed efficient and welcoming, but obviously recognised our 'Anglais/American' accents, and choose to act rudely.
After a substantial time, the waiter arrived with our Bouillabaisse. The soup was fine, but the fish was extremely boney and had not been descaled. Local friends of our waiter (thinking we could not understand) began making quips with the waiter about saving money in the kitchen, and the waiter encouraged with his own witty remarks. All were clearly enjoying our discomfort.
Not wishing to cause a scene, we paid (but probably shouldn't have) the minimum, and left. This is a sad indictment for Cassis which relies on tourism, but this is what we found.
A recommendation: Enjoy Cassis and Les Calanques, but be wary of dining portside, and steer well clear of Chez Gilbert!
