Vegas Babeeee!

A November 2006 trip to Las Vegas by bocch

Traveling to Las Vegas does not mean you have to gamble all the time. I have searched for and went sightseeing in the Vegas area for the past 2 years and have enjoyed it both times.

Overview

For the 2006 trip, a visit to Valley of Fire state park was planned. A relatively close state park with interesting rock formations and petrocliffs often overlooked. A trip to Death Valley in the opposite direction of Valley of Fire. A rafting trip down the Colorado River and a racing experience at Las Vegas Motor Speedway filled my days in Vegas. The best was the ride experience! Nights were filled with shows. Some shows that are overlooked yet, enjoyable.

Quick Tips:

The need to bring a camera is a necessity for sightseeing. A hat and sunblock for visiting the desert areas is also recommended.

Best Way To Get Around:

This is the second time I have traveled to Vegas and I have chosen to rent a car again. I was traveling with aging parents and the step up to get on the bus is not good for them anymore. Renting a car is reasonable in Vegas. It is cheaper by far to rent a car and drive to these destinations. Having a car available means you travel at your own pace, lunch where you want and see what you like. However, if you want to be better educated about what you are seeing a bus tour is another way to go.

The rooms were large, and very clean. Bathrooms were immaculate. Lobby was luxurious as well as being extremely nice to walk around. Some remodeling was being done at the time of my trip but it was being done neatly and did not inhibit my walking through the hotel. A new pool was just finished being built and it looked very inviting. The pool area now has a shark tank, giving new meaning to the term "swims with the fishes".

Lance BurtonBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Lance Burton is a major magician. His show reflects this talent in every way. He does cater to the children and explains his reasons for doing so. However, do not be fooled or should I say, let you the adult be fooled by his magic. There is no way you can figure out how he does it. His show is a must see. All other entertainers reference his show in theirs.

1000 Voices of Larry G. JonesBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "1000 Voices of Larry G. Jones at Fitzgerald's"

Truly, this guy can do a lot of different voices and he sings in those voices as well. A one man show with some audience participation. The only impression I did not like was his Johnny Cash... sounded like John Wayne... it was still funny to hear "John Wayne" sing...

A good impression of the rat pack. Good jokes, old time favorite songs that were sung well in the voices of stars we all know.

Attraction | "Black Canyon/Willow Beach River Adventures"

This was a rafting float type trip. The most difficult part of the trip is getting down to the river and getting on the raft. Once on the raft the guide was very informative and at the same time entertaining. However, participation by rafters helps make the trip pleasant. The trip was very organized and very educational.

Valley of Fire State ParkBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Valley of Fire"

Valley of Fire is a state park that has of course red rocks. Actually has multi colored rocks. This area also has many rock formations caused by water erosion and wind. The area also has well preserved petrocliffs. It has drawings on rocks that date back to early cave man days. It was amazing to see such simple drawings preserved for modern man to see.

Las Vegas SpeedwayBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

What a thrill! The most exciting ride I have ever been in or on! The track is open to visitors and if you time it right you can get in on a passenger ride or schedule yourself to drive a NASCAR race car. What a blast it was. Some other people there that tried it for the first time actually paid for a second ride on the spot. You just hafta go fast!

Death ValleyBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

Though I have this listed in my Vegas Vacation you should know that this state park is in California and is an all day car trip. I used a tour recommended on Vegas.com site. I drove first to Dante's Peak to look down on Death Valley. Next a stop a Zabriske point. A stop for lunch near the floor of Death valley. Then it was on the alkaline flats of Death Valley some 260 feet below sea level. While there we did a very long drive to Scotty's Castle but the mansion/castle was near closed by the time of the day we arrived.
