Amelia's Treasures

A travel journal to Amelia Island by FLDave

From the historic district of Fernandina to the plush resorts, there are a wide range of activities for all ages to enjoy.

  • 3 reviews
Walk the historic district, visiting the numerous and variety of shops along Centre Street and a block on either side. Wander back a little further and see the residential homes, many of which have been faithfully restored. Several churches with extensive histories are worthy of a visit, especially St. Peter's Episcopal and St. Michael's Catholic. Must see is Fort Clinch State Park with its history and location providing great views of the Atlantic Ocean and neighboring Cumberland Island, GA, across the river.

Quick Tips:

Fernandina News-Leader is published on Wednesday and Friday and contains comprehensive listings of local activites with some businesses running coupons in their ads.

Best Way To Get Around:

Best way to travel once arriving in the historic district is walking. Sidewalks can be found on the main streets and the roads are flat and in good shape. There is a trolley service that will transport you to various points on the island, but check its schedule to make sure it meets your time needs.

Restaurant

The local's secret for delicious and low-priced breastfast and lunch meals. No signage outside as it is located in the the former service bay of an Exxon gas station. Ray Sr. runs the gas station outside and his son T-Ray is behind the grill leading to their slogan "Eat here, get gas". Very self-service in that you walk to the counter, order and pay, pick up your silverware, fill your beverage cup and then find a seat and await the delivery of your food or your name to be called out. Considered by many to offer the best hamburger in town; but Friday's Fried Shrimp and Thursday's Chicken & Dumpling special keep bringing the locals back.

Shrimp FestivalBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Always held the first weekend in May, the Shrimp Festival provides 3 1/2 days of fun, food, entertainment and quality art & crafts. Activities start Thursday evening with a "hometown" parade up Centre Street comprised of local organizations, politicians and local school bands. Friday afternoon heralds the official start of the Festival with local schools and non-profit organizations providing shrimp goodies in almost every form imaginable and hundreds of artists and craftspersons from all over the U.S. coming to exhibit/sell their wares. Down by the riverfront, entertainment from local bands, some Goldie oldies (Swinging Medallions usually make an appearance) and shrimp boat races. Something for everyone.
