So this is Christmas—Texas-style! The Gaylord Texan knows how to impress. The resort’s massive 4-1/2 acre atrium is a visual feast with canyons, a river, restaurants, bridges and walkways. For Christmas, 1.2 million lights, Holiday displays, garden-scale trains, Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the reindeer are all there to make the Holiday magical. One of the Christmas displays includes miniature trains running on tracks, a gondola, and trees. Every 15 minutes a light show to music stops visitors here. Most impressive is the timing of the lights to the music, especially when the music is ...Read More

If you enjoy fine dining, don’t miss the Old Hickory Steakhouse. However, make your reservations early, especially during a busy holiday. We were lucky to get a 9:30pm reservation on our last night at the resort. All other slots were filled!Because it was so late, both couples shared a dinner. We started with the BLT Wedge, a butter lettuce wedge with crumbled bacon, tomatoes, and blue cheese dressing. The other couple had the organic greens salad, with various greens, candied pecans and citrus vinaigrette. Both couples ordered the 12oz filet mignon with cognac peppercorn sauce on the side. We tried the shallot and bacon skillet potatoes and the sauté baby spinach. Everything...Read More

Ama Lur features a contemporary Southwest menu. Here we tried the barbecued pork empanadas, spice rubbed ahi tuna and the vegetarian platter, which included steamed asparagus, black bean-roast banana mash, cilantro pesto whipped potatoes, jalapeno-chihuahua cheese grits and sauté wild mushrooms. The empanadas were quite good, especially with the serrano-mango chutney. The ahi received positive reviews, and the vegetarian platter was very interesting. The banana mash is apparently an acquired taste. The potatoes were tasty, but it was strange eating green mashed potatoes. I loved the sauté mushrooms and really enjoyed these particular grits. We came back another night for dessert. The toa...Read More

The Riverwalk Café is a buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast was $18; dinner was about $25 per person. The buffet offers a terrific selection. Breakfast included fresh fruit, cereals, several egg dishes, a selection of breakfast meats, pancakes, French toast, pastries, and juices. The eggs Benedict were slow to come up. We waited for the empty pan to be replenished, and when it finally was, it was with only 3!Dinner stations included soup, salad and cheeses, several hot vegetable dishes, breads and rolls, carved beef and ham, pizza, pasta, and Mexican food. Everything was fresh tasting. The only disappointment was the dessert selection. Not enough chocolate!Sitting o...Read More

Java Coast is a good place to pick up a quick sandwich, soup, or pastry. It’s convenient to the Convention Center. The food is just okay, but if there’s no time for a sit down meal between meetings, this is about the only thing available. There is comfortable, casual seating inside on chairs and couches. On the patio there are several small tables and chairs. The cookies here are Texas-sized. The chocolate chip cookies are especially good! The ham sandwich was not the best I’ve had. Pre-made and add your own mustard and mayo. The soup was very, very hot and pretty good. The smoothie menu sounded good, but it was too cold during our visit to try one. You can buy soft drinks in 20oz bottles here ...Read More

For the second year in a row, the Gaylord Texan hosted ICE!, a spectacular presentation of artistic ice sculptures. 2 million pounds of ice was turned into a true winter wonderland. It’s a bit of a hike through the resort to get to the entrance, which is at the far end of the convention center. If tickets are purchased at the door, there is a $3 per transaction service charge. There is no service charge when tickets are purchased online at www.gaylordtexan.com.At $25 per adult, the price is a little steep, but worth it if you’re just visiting. If I lived nearby, I might splurge every other year for the family to see this one-of-a-kind display. Kep...Read More
