Hike down the trail to the former exile colony(skip the expensive Donkey ride), take the tour of the colony, it's worth it, tasteful, and thought-provoking. Take time for a swim where you'll be the only people on the beach.

Quick Tips:

Check online for cheap inter-island flights (much better deals than when calling the airlines).

Best Way To Get Around:

Must rent a car, taxi service nonexistent.

Attraction

This is the site of a former exile colony for people with Hansen's disease (previously called leprosy). The tour is given by people who are part of the community, who were originally part of the exile colony, and now choose to still live there. You get to hear & read first-hand accounts of what it was like to be a "leper" physically, emotionally, and socially; How these people were treated by the world; about some of the inspiring individuals who chose to live among and help them; and how they built a vibrant community despite there disease and exile from society.

This is one of the least populated Islands of Hawaii. Very quiet, not tons of nightlife. Great if you want a quiet, peaceful getaway, away from the throng of tourists on the other Hawaiian islands, with absolutely beautiful beaches.
