Quote: Athens has two faces, and I love them both. At turns old and relaxing, then new and invigorating, it's a pleasure to explore.

As I got leather sandals fitted by a poet-sandal maker-Vogue magazine spread, I realized the charm of Greece is its effortless mix of old—really, really, crumbling old—and new.Hotel Attalos, like the rest of Athens, is old and new. It was renovated in 2003, and is air-conditioned and completely comfortable. The hotel has a central location, great rooms (we stayed in two, one before we left for the islands and one after returning), and a rooftop bar with a view of the Acropolis. We met people from all over the world at Attalos, and when a transport strike forced some groups to stay an extra day, no one seemed too bothered. People were relieved they had a cozy hotel with an accommodating ...Read More

Eden

Restaurant

Quote:
Our favorite restaurant in Athens, much to the surprise of my carnivorous friends, turned out to be Eden Vegetarian Restaurant in the Plaka neighborhood. The Moussaka was unmatched for the rest of our trip, and all of our new staples, from tzatziki to hummus, were equally delicious. Most of the menu is organic, but we would have loved it either way.The dining room is small enough to be intimate, and reminds me of a Parisian cafe, except that you're not so close as to knock elbows with your neighbor. The restaurant's location on a hill under the Acropolis is a really lively area for after-dinner wandering. We didn’t go back for a second meal because we were on an unspoken mission to see ...Read More

Brettos

Attraction

Quote:
Our favorite Athens night spot was a narrow distillery and bar in the Plaka called Brettos. We met new friends there from as far away as Iraq, and loved the atmosphere, both low-key (house kittens) and attractive (a wall of lighted bottles). The staff were friendly and there was a nice amount of people, with seats still open for us. Locals mixed easily with those just passing through. The drinks, particularly ouzo and Greek wines, were excellent. You can also buy bottles to take home.

Everywhere I looked while researching Athens, from Vogue magazine to the Houston Chronicle to NBC News, I was pointed toward the Poet-Sandal Maker. So I was surprised when we showed up at his shop off Monistiraki Square, around the corner from our hotel, and nobody was there except for the poet and his artist son.Stavros Melissinos and son Pantelis have been making sandals for 50 years for the likes of Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Barbra Streisand. And me. After choosing a design from sandals mounted on the wall (I’ll admit right here to choosing the one featured in Vogue), they fitted me with a gorgeous pair of leather flats for a rock-bottom price. As they molded my new shoes and I got ...Read More

Boat to Athens Photo, Samos, Greece

Finding out I couldn’t reach Turkey after riding overnight on a boat for the sole purpose of seeing Kusadasi and Ephesus (plus talking about it nonstop for a month before): not my proudest travel moment. But, it turns out, a fairly typical moment when taking boats in Greece. Our sea-faring adventures began with a stop at an Athens airport kiosk to buy tickets to the islands. We wanted to stay on Santorini and Samos, where we could catch the boat to Kusadasi, Turkey. We were open to suggestions for a third island stop, and ended up with a ticket to Paros because it was a convenient stop between Santorini and Samos. With this itinerary, we took four inter-island boat trips in Greece, two o...Read More
