Little Rock Rocks!

A travel journal to Little Rock by BeAdventureous!

Yes sir, this is it, where Billy Clinton got his start. But please don't judge us by him!! The Capitol city boasts many fine restaurants & fun things to do besides the scandel tour. Sitting on the Arkansas river, our river market is only the beginning....

The River Market has a Farmers Market during the spring, summer, and fall on Saturdays and Tuesdays with fresh produce and flowers lining the streets. Fine restaurants such as Cajuns Wharf on the River, Capers in WLR, Acadia in historic Hillcrest, Whole Hog Barbeque, and Spale in the Heights should not be missed! Climbing Pinnacle Mountain lined with trails, picnicking at Maumelle Park, golfing at Chenal Country Club, having a spa day at the Rejuvanation Clinic, lunching on the patio at the Oasis Renewal Center, even renting a cabin very inexpensively on the lovely grounds overlooking ponds with floating swans, there is plenty to occupy your time and energy.

Quick Tips:

Of course you can see Whitewater, the shredder at the Rose Law Firm, the lounge where Gennifer Flowers performed (soon to become the Peabody, complete with ducks and a whole new facelift) BUT that is not what Little Rock is really about. Our citizens are friendly, our city is picturesque, and we know how to enjoy the outdoors. Our State Capitol is the only one in the US to be modeled after the one in Washington. Our Wildwood for the Arts is top-notched, our Symphony is first-rate, and we have a Childrens Museum in our old train station. Antiques are abundant here, so do some polking around and return home with some treasures!

Best Way To Get Around:

Driving, definitely! Rent a car. Lots of biking here too. And hiking, of course.

The ducks have arrived in Arkansas! The Grand Opening was attended by the Who's Who of the city. A high tea was served in the lobby with scones and clotted cream and handmade chocolates. Champagne was served. All rooms have been remodeled and Rick Ammons, the sales mgr. can insure a wonderful stay!

Be sure and order the Oysters Bienville. They are the best anywhere!! They don't take reservations, so get there early because it continually packs out. If you are lucky you may get a seat overlooking the river. Upstairs is a patio area with limited food and a guitarist, but with killer views. Order a playdedo, their specialty, but you can't have more than one or find a driver. The owner, MaryBeth Ringgold, has a tip top wine list and some are not on the menu, so ask. She was invited to Mondavi's home in Napa because she sells tremendous amounts of wine and knows her stuff. And the mark-up is extremely low. There is a crawfish festival in May, with buckets for $5 bucks. The lounge is the happening place to be, elbow to elbow with live entertainment and a dance floor. Recently Travel and Leisure Magazine sent their crew to do a spread on it.

With patio dining during nice weather, fine wines, fresh herbs grown on property accentuating your gourmet meal, this is one place you wouldn't want to miss! Their chocolate creme brulee it out of this world! You'll think you died and went to Napa! The Arkansas Best salad with home-grown tomatoes and buffalo cheese is huge and delicious! Steaks melt in your mouth and the soups are special as well.

Restaurant | "Whole Hog Barbeque"

Featured in this month's Southwest Airlines magazine, this is a small family owned operation. Winning awards in Memphis in May barbeque cook-off contests, finally convinced Ron Blasingame to open a restaurant, hole in the wall. And with a six pack of his famous sauces, you can try em all. The yellow mustardy one is my favorite. Try a side of beans and slaw.

Packed and no place to wait, arrive early. A small place, very intimate and a menu that changes monthly. Great wines, great food. The soups are out of this world, as are the desserts. Innovative and unique, they make it up as they go and it works! You won't see this menu duplicated. Showy, every plate presentation is a work of art.

Like the little girl with the curl, when it's good , it's very good and when it's bad...well it's not good. Inconsistent, but worth the trial and error. They will try everything to make it up to you if you are not pleased, I will say that for them. Located in a office building, you must go up the elevator to find it. Getting there does not have the ambience of other places in town. The wine is terrific.

An open kitchen where you can see your dinner prepared if so inclined. Art lines the walls from local artists, including Barry Thomas. The white chocolate/milk chocolate creme brulee is the best ever! Menus are changed seasonally. Great wine list and nice bar area. In a strip shopping mall, a really nice restaurant!

One of the best restaurants in the city. The female chef does a fabulous job. The souffles are to die for and need to be ordered at the beginning of your meal. The wine list is astounding. Fresh herbs accompany the meal. Whatever you order is bound to be amazing!

Restaurant

There are 2, one in Pavilion in the Park on Cantrell and one in the Rivermarket on Wm. Clinton Dr. The one in the Rivermarket serves a week-end brunch, hard to find in this town. It is marvelous. Bloody Mary's and Mimosas accompany an ecletic menu. Both are top-notched and EVERYTHING is GREAT! Patio dining available on Cantrell. Desserts are wondrous too. They cater as well.

Restaurant

Best burgers, malts, including adult (with liquor) ones, very art deco with purple cow drinks, as well as fun posters of famous cows everywhere. Paul Bash, the owner will ensure your service is excellent. There is one in Plano, Texas as well, but it all started here! Very tongue-in-cheek menu, fun!!

A beautiful spot for contemplation. Ducks & swans join in the picturesque lake. Rocks inscribed with scripture dot the pathways that wind around the lake and trail areas. Benches with scenic views of waterfalls, piers with seating that go out onto the water, swings where you can see the sunsets, picnic tables, cabins for rent, a bookstore, and dining patio opened for lunch makes for an unforgettable afternoon.

Pinnacle Mountain State ParkBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Pinnacle Mountain Park"

It is about an hour or so hike, trails lead up the mountain at a gentle incline, getting steep as you move closer to the top. Huge rocks hug the top and scrambling over them makes for an aerobic work-out. Incredible views await. Picnic areas are at the bottom, as are wide grassy areas to fly kites. A wonderful handicapped trail paved winds around a pond and wildflowers, very picturesque, perfect for strollers or leisurely walks.
