Out of every place I've ever traveled to, Hawaii is my favorite by far! I've only been to the island of Maui, but I hope to see the rest of the islands in the near future.Upon arriving at the Kahului airport, my family and I were greeted with yellow floral leis. (However, I don't think they do this anymore, as it may have been too expensive).
We grabbed our luggage, got our rental car, and drove to the town of Kihei. Both times we've been to Maui, we rented a house on the beach. The upside of renting a house (as opposed to staying at a hotel) is that you feel like you live there... you're not just a "guest" on vacation. Also, you can save a fair share of money, since you can stay home and cook most of your meals instead of dining out every day. Granted, some people may not like this option. It means you have to go grocery shopping, and cook your own meals. It really depends on the traveler and your personal preferences. For people who want to be pampered and stay in a beautiful hotel, I recommend the Fairmont Kei Lani. It is located in Kiehi, and is one of the most spectacular hotels on the island! It is rather expensive, however. A standard size room (with no ocean view... just mountain and parking lot) may run you a night. So you can imagine how expensive the oceanfront rooms are! Regardless of your view, all of the rooms are beautiful and spacious... even the least expensive ones!As for shopping and dining, your best bet is to visit the town of Lahaina. This is where you will find a fairly large shopping area, and many restaurants. A great dining experience is at the "Old Lahaina Luau"! Not only do you get to dine on Hawaiian fare and drink all the Mai Tais you can handle, but you are also treated to an authentic Hawaiian luau complete with hula dancers and Hawaiian singers. If you are the adventurous type, you can bikeride down the Haleakala crater (an old dormant volcano), or hangglide off of its peak!Did I mention the sunsets? Hawaii has some of the best sunsets in the world! The beaches there are beautiful, and the views are spectacular! Everywhere you look, there is another photo op!
