We wanted to eat somewhere that was very Key West. We had considered Hog’s Breathe Saloon because we wanted to get a T-shirt but we asked a local and they suggested Sloppy Joe’s. At their current location since 1937 they proved to be an excellent choice. Like many things in Key West Sloppy Joe’s has a Hemingway connection, he is credited with coming up with the name Sloppy Joe’s. Joe Russell the bar’s founder was a close friend of Papa and he was the model for Freddy in To have and To Have Not. Today it is the sound of honky tonk that will draw you in as well as the smell of something delicious cooking. Our first stop was the gift shop and it was a wise move. With the purc...Read More

We booked our Miami highlights tour at the Excursions Desk as soon as it opened after sailing. The cost was $32 per adult and it was a 2 1/2 hour tour. After departing through security we headed to the bus area. The drivers were checking to make sure you had a ticket to their particular tour, be careful there are a lot of buses and lots of different tours. The buses are new and comfortable and air-conditioned. Our tour guide was Linda and our driver was Otem. Tips are welcomed and encouraged. We started by learning that Miami is the busiest cruise port in the world with over 1.8 million people getting on cruises here. That means that cruises like ours don't even count i...Read More

We purchased our Conch Train Tour at the same time as our other two excursions. The cost was $25 and it lasts for 90 minutes. After clearing security we walked into town and walked to the Mallory Square where the tour begins. We got on an early tour than our ticket time but it was no problem with them. We got into the front seat and I want to go on record as saying this is not a good idea. Not only was it narrower than the other seats so our knees were crushed but there was no way to keep the sun from beating down on us. Key West in October is very warm, the temperature was over ninety degrees even quite early in the morning. We had wondered how it could take ninety minutes to ...Read More

This is a 3 and 1/2 hour tour leaving at 1pm. This allowed us time to do a little shopping, yes I actually bought Al a Panama hat and yes I went back and forth with the shop owner. No I won’t pay $20 I could have bought it cheaper in Key West, I finally settled on $15 and actually that is a lot cheaper than Key west but I’m also sure I should have only paid $10 but I am a pretty pathetic bargainer. On the other hand my friend Richard got his sombrero’s at a very discounted price and they even through in an ankle bracelet for Jackie. Originally we hadn’t wanted to take the catamaran tour because there was all you could drink beer and Margaritas and we figured it was going to be a bunch o...Read More

The only excursion we ordered before we got on the cruise was the Mayan Ruins Tour. There were several choices. We opted for Chacchoben strictly because it was a four hour tour and the others were a lot longer. As it turned out this was a very good choice. Until 1999 Chacchoben was largely forgotten and visits have only been allowed there for the last five years. The downside of this tour was that it left at 7am in the morning, no sleeping in that morning. Lisbeth our tour guide made very sure that we understood what the discovery of Chacchoben has meant to this area of the Yucatan Peninsula. Before the cruise lines started to stop here the nearest gas station was two hours away. Now th...Read More
