A Week in Caye Caulker

Overview

Welcome Photo, Caye Caulker, Belize
Quote:
Caye Caulker is a backpacker's paradise. Most of the lodgings are backpacker hotels and very reasonably priced. However, though I love backpacking there are some necessities that I cannot live without (i.e. air-conditioning when temps are over 80) which I was still able to find at Caye Caulker.Food in general on the island is decent but nothing to rave home about. However, I've put in a couple of restuarant suggestions in this journal, just because there's a lot of restaurants to choose from.Quick Tips: Best Way To Get Around: Walking is truly the best way to get around. However, the airstrip is far and if you have more than minimal amounts of luggage then I suggest re...Read More

Seaside Cabanas is the most luxurious accommodation in Caye Caulker. That being said, Caye Caulker is also a backpackers island, so where on some islands Seaside Cabanas would be considered budget.Their service is great, their rooms are fairly comfortable (beds are a little hard), there's a pool on grounds (the only one in Caye Caulker), and every room has an air conditioner. In addition, the location is great, Caye Caulker Village is not very large and the hotel is located in the heart of the village, right next to the main dock. The only thing that it is far from is the air strip. But, the airstrip is walkable. I walked it with a dive bag, a small rollerbag, and a laptop bag. ...Read More

Habaneros

Restaurant

Quote:
Habaneros serves Mexican/Belizean cuisine. It's one of the better places that I ate at during the trip.

As the name implies, many of their dishes are fairly spicy. Also, many of their spicy dishes come with a small habanero pepper. If you've never had one, they are extremely spicy. Just a little nibble made my whole mouth burn.

If you find yourself on Caye Caulker, I suggest at least one night at this restaurant.

Don Corelone's is the closest thing that you can get to fine dining in Caye Caulker. It, along with Habaneros, is probably one of the better restaurants on the island.

Great crew, great diving, and they're a one stop shop. If they don't go there, they'll find someone else who will. However, there was one dive (the Elbow) that I just could not get enough people to fill a boat between dive shops in both Ambergis Caye and Caye Caulker. So I missed it, too bad, just means that I'll have to go back. Most other diving including the blue hole they will do or in the case of the blue hole they booked me on a boat out of Ambergis Caye. The blue hole dive includes a stop over at the Booby Sanctuary, which was really fun. Be warned the blue hole is almost a 2 hour trip north past Turneffe Island over open water so depending on the boat you get it...Read More
