Contiki Wild Western Tour - Santa Barbara and More

Overview

Considering that I was in pain with a sore and swollen knee (stupid uneven pavement in San Francisco tripped me up rather badly), I didn't really get up to much in Santa Barbara. There was lovely Jasmine plants with their beautiful scent at the motel where we stayed... and I did find a place to get a massage... Though the one thing I did do, on the way to Santa Barbara, was to stop at the Madonna Inn. You've got to see that, once in your life. If you thought that Vegas was tacky, think again...!!!Quick Tips: Stop by Carmel-By-The-Sea, on the way from San Francisco to Santa Barbara. It's a beutiful little spot, but very expensive.... If you're into art, though, this i...Read More

I didn't get to spend much time at the beach at all. I just saw it, then left on the bus.

But I do remember that the morning was pretty overcast, though we were told that the clouds would burn away by afternoon (the time we were leaving).

But the beach was very pretty, despite the clouds only just disappearing... palm trees and white sand... nice!

Tacky, tacky, tacky! Photo, Santa Barbara, California

Outside of Santa Barbara, at San Luis Obispo, is the Madonna Inn. We didn''t stay there, but we did stop there to have a look. The only word I can use to describe this hotel is ''tacky''. It's that, and more. It's VERY tacky! There are 109 rooms, all of which are themed, and no two are alike! (Not that I saw them - this is just what I heard). Now the toilets. Even they are themed! I saw two of the women''s toilets, and they were both not the usual, run of the mill toilets. One even had a little toilet for a girl, as well as a miniature basin and taps for little girls to use! As for the men's toilets? Have a look at ...Read More

We stopped off in a place called Carmel for lunch, where Clint Eastwood used to be mayor. It was a rather pretentious town, where every shop was an art gallery, or over priced. I didn''t buy much there, just limped around the shops with the others before having lunch, and going back to the coach. Some of Carmel''s attractions include Forest Theatre, "California''s oldest outdoor theatre", Point Lobos State Reserve and the Carmel Mission Basilica. For those in need of retail therapy (shopping!), there''s more than enough variety and quantity of shops to sooth away your stress... at least until you look at the price tags! ^^; Carmel is also filled with art galleries. It is an ...Read More

15th July 1999 Today we headed from San Francisco to Santa Barbara. It was yet another driving day, but seeing that half the tour group ended in San Francisco ("LA to the Bay" ended there while we "Wild Western"ers went on back down to Anaheim again), I had two seats to myself to put my leg up on! We stopped off in a place called Carmel for lunch, where Clint Eastwood used to be mayor. It was a rather pretentious town, where every shop was an art gallery, or over priced. I didn''t buy much there, just limped around the shops with the others before having lunch, and going back to the coach. Our stop after that was at a place called the ...Read More
