The Grumpy Troll brew pub and restaurant is where we usually go for lunch when we bike out to Mt Horeb. Under new ownership this last November, the new owners remodeled the interior which badly needed it. The menu has changed for the worse, however, but there food they offer is well prepared and they at least kept the wonderful hand made potato chips with grated parmesan cheese that we love so much. The beer is tastes like most of the brew pubs I have tried, which is not that good. Brewpub beer often tastes metallic and the flavors are often muddy so I order lemonade instead. My wife ordered the portobello mushroom sandwich which she enjoyed and I had a grilled cheese which was also good quality bar f...Read More

The Military Ridge Bike Trail makes a great day trip for people who want to get a sense of rural Wisconsin from a different perspective than the seat of a car. Connecting Madison with Verona, Mt Horeb, Barneveld and ending at Governor Dodge State park, the Military Ridge Bike Path stretches much farther than most bikers would attempt in one day. The total trail length is over 60 miles one way, so doing a section between two towns is usually how we do it. From Verona you can take the trail for about 13 miles through some wonderful farmland which then turns to woods and ends up in Mt Horeb. The last mile and a half is up a steady incline which is never that demanding, but, by the end, your legs wi...Read More

Believe it or not there is a Mustard Museum that celebrates what else but Mustard! Located at 100 West Main Street in Mt Horeb, the Mustard Museum is a culinary delight. Barry Levenson is the man behind the mustard and he and his knowledgeable staff can tell you more than you ever wanted to know about this neglected lunch meat condiment that could be so much more. Make sure to view the current show in the Mustard Piece Theatre. Then, once your appetite has been wetted, go to the back tasting area and have at it! If you are like me, you will be leaving with a smile on you face and some yummy mustard for you fridge back home. There are over three thousands mustards in the collection on display and...Read More

Cave of the Mounds

Attraction

Quote:
If you are into geology or just looking for a fun way to spend a couple of hours, try touring the incredible cave of the mounds located right outside Mt. Horeb. The caves were originally discovered back in 1939 when a quarry operator blasted away a piece of land and saw a gaping hole. They were stunned to find this huge underground cavern complete with huge stalactites and stalagmites. People from all over the country come to see this national landmark and you should too. There is a thirty minute video presentation that details how the caves were formed and some of the terms used to describe the formations. Once inside they guide you around and show you the huge caves. It is really an amazing n...Read More

Story/Tip

Mount Horeb is known for its Trolls and I don't know the exact story behind it other than their are a large population of Norwegians that settled here and who's descendants still reside in this little rural town. The community has used this symbol as the town's mascot. When you enter Main Street take a walk along the sidewalk and you will see 8- 10 Troll large Troll sculptures outside gift shops, the bank and the municipal building. Everywhere you look these ugly little creatures with big feet are staring at you. Gift shops sell troll paraphernalia and restaurants have troll burgers on the menu. It's one big happy troll fest.
