San Francisco - dinner in Chinatown, Alcatraz, Ghiradelli Square, Fisherman's Warf and Lombard Street... Quite an interesting city, and a lot of it (well, mostly the weather) reminded me of Melbourne. ^_^

Chowder in sour dough bread!! That was one of my highlights! That stuff was yummy!

Other than that, I really enjoyed seeing (if only quickly) how huge Chinatown was there, and comparing it to the tiny Chinatown in Melbourne... and visiting Alcatraz was pretty good. There were no terrorists, which might have spiced things up, but it was better without them, I'm sure. ^_~

Quick Tips:

Take a tour around the city, and visit the famous places. Alcatraz, Pier 39, Ghiradelli Square, Fisherman's Warf.

But be careful not to trip over uneven pavement on the way to Lombard Street and hurt your knee, like I did. Makes walking up that street painful. :p

Best Way To Get Around:

I enjoyed walking around (before I hurt my knee, anyway) and seeing the famous areas near the warf-type area of the city.

To get from area to area, though, a taxi or the famous San Franciscan trollies! They're really cute, and good fun to ride, with the driver playing music on the bells. ^_^

Alcatraz

Activity

It
Alcatraz ("The Rock") was a rather unspooky place. (If you're into spooky when you're visiting prisons, I've heard that Pentridge (an ex-jail in Melbourne), which is now closed to visitors I believe, was pretty scary. People who I've spoken to who'd visited both places were more scared by Pentridge.) It was constantly filled with visitors and tour guides. I don't know, but maybe the feeling of the place changes when it gets dark...?

Anyway, we wandered around the cells and saw some of the stuff we'd seen in the movie "The Rock" (which we'd watched before going to Alcatraz!).

We went on the tour around the cell blocks, with a head set, which was quite cool. You got to hear lots of stuff that you'd never find out about, just walking around by yourself.

I'd be interested in going on the guided tour with a real life guide next time...

Anyway, the hours of operation are:

The ferry starts at 9.30am each morning, and runs about every thirty to fourty minutes to and from Alcatraz. It closes in summer at 6.30pm, and at 4.30pm during the rest of the year. (Though there are evening tours.)

Pier 39

Activity

We had a stop for lunch at Pier 39, and all went off in small groups to have a look around. Our group went through most of the shops, looking for gifts for friends and family back home rather than the rides, and ended up at one of the cafes for lunch. We were told to try the chowder, and I wanted to try the sourdough bread... and so when we found a cafe that had chowder IN a 'bowl' made of sourdough bread, we had to eat there! YUM!

Afterwards, we went and took the photographs of Alcatraz from the end of the pier, and went to watch the sea lions for a while, before heading back...

Check out http://www.pier39.com/ for more information of what to see and do at Pier 39!

I'd been told to visit Ghiradelli Square before I went to San Francisco, by people back home... and since I love chocolate, I thought that I'd go and have a look.

Well, I was in pain as I'd hurt my knee, but I managed to limp there and limp around the Square (there's more than just chocolate shops!).

Shops range from fashion to sunglasses to jewelry, and on top of that, the Square is filled with art galleries.

Also, there are many places to eat. Vietnamese food, an internet cafe, Belgian fries and crepes, Indian cuisine... and we can't forget the chocolate!!

Ghirardelli has both a chocolate factory there, and a chocolate shop and cafe!

The range of chocolates is from cooking chocolate to sweets and drinking chocolate. If you want to drown yourself in chocolate, this is the place to be! ^_^

Have a look at http://www.ghirardellisq.com/ for more information about Ghiradelli Square.

13th July 1999

We left Bass Lake and the Sierra Nevadas to head for San Francisco! Another day of driving through the countryside, before reaching the City by the Bay.

Getting to San Francisco, I thought "When did we get back to Melbourne?" The sky was overcast - I guess it was due to the fog and the sea and all of that kind of thing, and it was rather cold. I had to buy one of the San Francisco wind cheaters that they were selling to keep warm!!

I didn't realize that there were so many wind mill things around San Francisco, all over the hills, to generate electricity! It was funny to see whole hills covered in the things!

When we got there, we heard that we weren't to stay in the usual Contiki hotel, and had to be put in another hotel because some convention had kicked us out. (Why weren't the convention people kicked out??? Why us?!)

We had a nice city tour, heading into San Fran over Bay Bridge. When we got over the bridge, we got told that it had been knocked down by an earthquake in the past, and it used to be four different levels instead of the two it is now. Glad they told us after going over the bridge!!

We went around the city, but didn't go over those really steep hills - the coach couldn't make it! But we saw Union Square, Haight Ashbury (where all the hippies are), Fishermans Warf and the Golden Gate Bridge. We got a stop for photos over the Bridge, to take photos of the San Francisco skyline. (Or of the bridge.)

I wonder why it's called ''Goldengate'' when it's a rusty red colour....

We stopped off at Pier 39, and went for a walk at lunch time to see the sea lions, and look over at Alcatraz. We had lunch in one of the many cafes on the pier. Chowder in sour dough bread - quite yummy. ^_^

Afterwards we went to our hotel. Hrm... It was probably the worst on the tour. It just didn't have a nice feel to it, being like a hole-in-the-wall type place. But we only needed it to sleep in, thank goodness.

For dinner that night, we all walked down to the trolly (yay, it was cute, and the guy driving it played music on the bell) down to Chinatown, where we got out and went to dinner!

Mmm... a large Chinese banquet - very good!

After dinner, we went out and were going to go to a bar or two... but waiting for the taxis, it was freezing - very much like Melbourne in winter!! The wind was a lazy wind - it went straight through you. :p

We were thankful when the taxis came - half of us got in a limo taxi! That was really cool. We could pretend to be rich and famous. ^_^

We headed out to a bar, but the guys quickly left that one, saying that the only female inside was the bar tender, and they were sure it was a gay bar, and headed to another.

Throughout the tour so far, we'd seen beggars and homeless people in each city. Such a shock, as you don't see things that bad in Melbourne. Maybe one or two ... but out in the US, you can hardly walk down the street without tripping over the homeless! (The US government should really do something about that!!!) It was really quite shocking.

Here, they were near these bars we were at, and following us, trying to get us to give them money, and even trying to call taxis for us, to get a ''tip'' for doing so (as if we were incapable of getting taxis for ourselves!)

That was the sadest thing about America - that the government does absolutely nothing about their homless people, and just leaves them on the streets.

Anyway, the other bar we went to was nice, and there were guys and girls there, so the guys on the tour felt more comfortable. We stayed there for a while, until we went back to the hotel, and to bed.

14th July 1999

This morning, we headed off on a boat to Alcatraz - the Rock!

Wandering around the place, we saw lots of cells and everything. Lots of things that I saw, I'd seen in the movie "The Rock" ... it was pretty cool being there. Some people said it was creepy, but I didn't feel that.

We went on the tour around the cell blocks, with a head set, which was quite cool. You got to hear lots of stuff that you'd never find out about, just walking around by yourself.

Afterwards, we headed back on the boat for some lunch, and then to walk around San Francisco.

First we went to Fisherman's Warf, and went up into a cafe there, overlooking some of the water with the fishing boats. The American's really don't have any clue how to do good fish and chips!! I went all the way to Fisherman's Warf, and the fish and chips sucked - down the road does 100 times better! ^^;;;

America is no place for fish and chips.

Then we headed up to take a look at Lombard Street - that street is one of the really steep ones, and part of it is completely composed of switchbacks, because it's too steep for cars to have a straight road!

Unfortunately on the way there, I tripped over some concrete that was sticking up and busted up my knee. -_-

I managed to limp up Lombard Street (what was it? 40 degrees angle??), taking many stops along the way, and got there and got my photos taken!

But I didn't want to go back to my hotel yet... so we all trudged off (me limping and making jokes at myself) down to Ghiradelli Square, where all the chocolates are!

After wandering around there, at the shops there, and buying some chocolate, we caught a taxi back to our hotel.

I managed to get ice for my leg, and we stayed quietly in our room until it was tea time.

Dinner was at the Hard Rock cafe ... we had to walk (I had to limp) there. :p

The meal wasn't bad, but my knee didn't allow me to enjoy the evening there. My knee was swelling up, so after dinner, I went with Jill in a taxi, and got dropped off back at the hotel, to sit with ice on my knee and watch tv (yay for the X-Files being on tv!), while others went out to bars, or to the movies.
