Experience Cordoba, Spain

A December 2005 trip to Cordoba by JessicaMStephens

Upstream from Sevilla, a short train-ride from Madrid, and a world away from my home, Cordoba was a relaxing couple of weeks and a vacation spot I will definitely return.

Known for it's main attraction, The Mesquite, Cordoba is a world of culture undiscovered by most. An inexpensive visit to the bath for a massage and you will be ready to roam the small alleys and orange tree lined streets of Cordoba.

Quick Tips:

When travelling in Spain, keep in mind local stores, restaurants, attractions may be closed mid-afternoon for the tradition of siesta, or a nap time for locals. This is also an opportunity to explore the nature of Spain or rest in your hotel.

Best Way To Get Around:

Cordoba can mostly be explored through walking. A short taxi ride may be required to venture out to locations or to take from the train station to your hotel for the first time.
Rooms here overlook a gracious inner courtyard framed by arches. The Castilian-style furniture, gleaming marble, and quality oil paintings add elegance to excellent value. The hotel is around the corner from the Plaza del Potro. Management also runs an even cheaper lodging, the Hostal Maestre, and two types of apartments down the street; the top of the lot are large and clean and offer one of the best deals in town. www.hotelmaestre.com

Attraction | "Night Clubs"

The night clubs in Cordoba, as well as the rest of Spain are very lively and attract a large population. Expect to arrive after 11pm and for the club to not be closed until the early hours of 6-7am. Most clubs play salsa/hip-hop, and though I have never been familiar with this music, I definitely enjoyed every song played and the overall atmosphere. If you happen to visit in the summer months, many popular clubs are held outside in the warm night weather.

Mezquita (La Mezquite) - MosqueBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "The Mezquita (The Mosque)"

To take a stroll through the historic quarter of Cordoba is to discover a beautiful network of small streets, alleys, squares and whitewashed courtyards arranged around the Mosque-Cathedral, which reflects the importance of the city during medieval times and which is a real symbol of the capital.

Its fame spread after it was built, due to its ingenious construction and its wealth. The "forest of columns" (there are nearly a thousand of them), set on top of the Visigoth basilica, is one of the main attractions of this place. Nineteen naves make up the quadrangular plan of the early mosque, divided by a double series of arches, which combine Moorish arches and semicircular arches. In addition to alternating brick with stone, and red with white, other decorative elements were used, such as sculpted marble, stucco, mosaics, and plasterwork.
