Sallanches is a small town famous as the gateway to the Mont-Blanc massif. Many thousands of vacationers pass through the city ever year which deserves to be visited. I was surprised when I did not find info about Sallanches in IgoUgo and decided to start filling the gap; hopefully fellow travelers will add more helpful tips. Situated in Haute Savoie (Upper Savoy) department high in the French Alps, the town is surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers. Mont-Blanc dominates the landscape here but picturesque castle-like Aigulle Rouge mountain towering above Sallanches is very impressive too. The Chamonix valley which starts here can be considered everything...Read More

French chocolate is one of the most popular types of confection in the world (remember that in 1660, a Frenchman named Debauve was dubbed the first "Royal Chocolate Maker", by King Louis the 14th of France). For the chocoholics of all ages, there is a wonderful place in Sallanches called Fabrique par Chocolaterie du Mont-Blanc. For more than one hundred years they produce wonderful chocolate using fresh alpine milk. The factory is 60km or so from the Swiss border and makes variety of the delicious chocolates - milk, dark, with fillings – you got the idea. Series of chocolate bars depicting different Haute Savoie areas is particularly impressive (and tastes great). Visitors and locals alike...Read More

We start our tour at the train station. For many visitors it will be the first place where they can see magnificent Mont-Blanc massif. At the station square you will find local bus station and a taxi stop. The bus schedule is usually tied to the train arrival/departure. Cross the station and walk up along the Rue de la Gare. Popular supermarket Casino is on the right side; prices here are much lower than in Megève or Chamonix. One block later you arrive to the Place Charles-Albert – main town square. The picturesque square offers spectacular 360º view of surroundings. The orientation desk will point to the items of interest around you. The impressive monument in the center of the square dedica...Read More

This museum is located in the old castle called le Château des Rubins, 100m from the Church Square - Place Saint-Jacques. The bulky castle was built in the 14th century and until the French Revolution was occupied by noble families. Now it houses very interesting exposition depicting the French Alps geology, flora and fauna. On the first floor visitors will find the expositions depicting four seasons in the mountains, interesting chamoix exposition and a tourist shop (postcards, calendars, signs of zodiacs, beautiful posters, DVD, VHS, maps etc). The documentation center is located on the second floor. Third floor is dedicated to the geology of the Haute-Savoie region. Probably the m...Read More

The first settlement at the confluence of two torrents Sallanche and Frasse dates back to the 5th century. Recent excavations indicate the probable existence of a Christian community in the 6th century. Until the end of the 13th century, the small town develops slowly becoming the religious and economic center of the area. In the 14th century Saint Jacques church extends its influence on many parishes in the area. The ecclesiastical presence is reinforced in Sallanches by the foundation of two convents: Capuchins in 1619 and Ursulines in 1630; they will disappear in the storm from the French Revolution. An important weekly market (still existing nowadays) brings the agricultural produce...Read More
